Crossover games
This is like a fantasy you had as a kid and somehow it became real, seeing one of your favourite characters from a game show up in another game. I must admit that for some time I thought that this is just wishful thinking, but then there are games that bring your favourite characters into other games or sometimes they even bring characters that died in a game back to life (in a way). Maybe not everyone is into crossover games but I'm glad that they exist!
What's so great about crossover games?
Let me explain with an example, Link is one of my favourite characters in a game and you would normally only see him in the Legend of Zelda games, which is cool but that kind of limits his appearance in games. But with him showing up in Super Smash Brothers and now also in Super Mario Kart it gives fans of Link more chances to play as him and I think that's a good think. But doesn't that kind of destroy the image of Link? Perhaps, I mean it's difficult to imagine Link in a kart throwing shells at a plumber or a giant turtle with spikes and make that canon in the Zelda games, but I don't think you should look at it that way! See it as a moment where you take games less seriously and just have fun with your favourite characters, so seeing Link show up in a Mario Party game is fine with me and I bet a lot of fans wouldn't mind that either!
Can you make a whole game out of a crossover idea?
Sometimes it's just a skin and/or costume you can wear, for example in Dead Rising 3 you have different costumes of several familiar characters and that's as close as you're going to get to a crossover. But in some games you really get to play as a totally different character that you might not expect in that game. Then there are also games that just bring a lot of characters from different games together and then they have to fight it out, for example look at Capcom VS Marvel or Street Fighter X Tekken. Sure you can look for a story in those games but I think most people just want to play as one of their favourite characters and beat the shit out of another character. So there are games out there that give people that love crossovers a lot of freedom, but it's usually a fighting game and not really the type of game that breaks the laws of what you would expect. So seeing Mega Man shooting zombies in Resident Evil is probably not going to happen, but there is the Mega Man outfit in Dead Rising so if you really want to have a Mega Man zombie killing thing going on then you can at least get an idea how that would feel like.
