Resident Evil Umbrella Corps

Now this is a game I didn't see coming, not that it's such a good kept secret but more the fact that another Resident Evil spin off game was absolutely crap. Do you remember that game? Well I won't hold it against you if you couldn't remember it. The other game is called Operation Raccoon City, I have to admit that at first it looked promising but after playing it I realized that this game isn't good (I'm being mild here). So what can you expect from Umbrella Corps? Hopefully something better than Operation Raccoon City!

What is Umbrella Corps actually?

The most interesting part about this game, as far as I can see, is that it's a first person shooter. In Resident Evil games that hasn't really worked out so well for that type of gameplay but maybe Umbrella Corps can change that. It's a competitive online first person shooter, so maybe a bit of CoD but also with zombies. It's an interesting idea but I think when people hear about a new Resident Evil game then this isn't really what they were expect and probably also not something they're interested in. I could be wrong about that but so far I can't say that I've heard someone being really positive about this game.

Why are people not positive about this game?

Three things come to mind. First of all it's a first person shooter, as scary as that might be (survival horror games in first person mode are no joke!) when you look at Resident Evil it's not really something that fits with Resident Evil. Just look at previous Resident Evil games that you had to play in first person mode, for example Resident Evil Survivor and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles. Those aren't really the best Resident Evil games and it really surprises me that we go back to first person mode in Resident Evil. Another thing I don't like is competitive multiplayer, I don't think this belongs in a Resident Evil game and anyone else that seems to think that it does belong in a Resident Evil game must have a completely different experience in the previous Resident Evil games than me. There's nothing wrong with competitive multiplayer, I just don't think that it works for a Resident Evil game. Then there's the fact that you play as a couple of Umbrella agents, this might be interesting to some people but I think most Resident Evil fans just want to play as Chris, Jill and Leon. When I look back at that other Umbrella agent game, Operation Raccoon City, I never felt a connection with the characters and if one of them got hurt or died it didn't really interest me. So what hope does Umbrella Corps have?

The game could surprise you?

I would find that extremely unlikely but I want to keep an open mind about games and it's not right to judge a game you've never played. But looking at the experience I have with Resident Evil games, both the good ones and the bad ones, I do think that Umbrella Corps is going to be a less interesting title in the series. Mostly because people really want to play a new Resident Evil game, for example Resident Evil 7 or a remake of Resident Evil 2 and 3, that stays close to the games that we love and know. I think Capcom made a good move with the first Resident Evil Revelations game, that was a step in the right direction but the second RE Revelations game kind of ruined that for me. So you can imagine that I'm sceptical about Umbrella Corps, but I'll keep an eye on this game and if it will turn out to be a good game then I'll be one of the first to admit that I was wrong!
