Playing games makes you popular?

This week I heard one of the weirdest things, people that play games to become (more) popular. What a difference with twenty years ago when people didn't even admit that they play games because they thought that this would make them less popular or that they would be bullied because of their hobby. Apparently these days gaming is so popular that people play them hoping to become more popular, eventhough I still find it hard to believe that people actually do that!

How do you become more popular when you play games?

Well it's not just playing games, from what I heard it's some people with streams on Twitch (under the name of games or them playing games) but in truth it's mostly about them. Not that there is anything wrong with telling something about yourself or showing the viewers a bit of what you do or what you like but if 80% or 90% of the stream is about you then I find it weird that you would call yourself a gamer and put up a stream that is supposedly about gaming. But games are popular these days, so in a way it makes sense that some people want to take advantage of that and improve their own popularity with that as well.

So these attention seekers aren't really gamers?

What is a gamer? I guess you could ask yourself that, do you have to play non stop games or can you also be a gamer if you play once or twice a week a game? But I think it's weird to call yourself a gamer and put your stream under gaming while it's mostly about you and only you, I think that's misleading and wrong. Perhaps they actually like gaming but just don't have a lot to tell about games or don't want to talk about games all the time during their stream. I don't know these people so it's not fair for me to judge, but I do find it odd that people make a stream about gaming when it's mostly about themself.

Are streamers attention seekers?

I'm certain that they try to get a lot of viewers for their stream but I think that most of them play games because they enjoy playing games and what to share their fun with the viewers. There could be some rotten apples on Twitch or youtube, but I think the majority just enjoys playing games and wants to share that with you. Besides it's still up to you if you want to watch or not, nobody forces you to watch a stream or video for that matter! So if attention seekers annoy you then the best thing you can do is ignore them!
