Do we still need controllers?

For some time I've seen the attempts of getting rid of controllers, the most obvious attempt is the Kinect from Microsoft and I must admit that I'm glad that it didn't work. It seems silly but I really like using a controller, eventhough they've changed over the years it's still something I prefer over the house and keyboard and definitely over something like the Kinect. Perhaps it's not high tech, but at least it works and it's easy to use!

What's wrong with controllers?

That's a good question, I guess you would have to ask people that are trying to replace the controller that question. From personal experience I do realize that controllers have their flaws, first of all they're expensive and break really fast. The slightest hit can already ruin a controller, the more advanced the controller (for example the elite controller) the more risk it brings because if you drop it then that could already be fatal depending on the situation. Another problem is that a controller needs batteries, of course you can also get a charge kit but if you play a lot then that alone won't help you. Then there is also the issue of having multiple people over and not enough controllers for everyone. So isn't is easier if you could just control characters in a game with your own body? That seems logic and like a good idea, unfortunately so far it's pretty lame and I don't think a lot of people are interested in that.

Ideas like the Kinect are ridiculous?

Well the idea isn't ridiculous, but you do kind of look ridiculous if you move like a madman in front of your tv. Just imagine the neighbours seeing you like that, they might think you're having a seizure! I'm not hating on the Kinect or anything like that, but at this point it's more like a thing you could do than a real replacement for your controller. I think that most people would still prefer to use their controller instead of something like the Kinect. Just look at the Xbox One console sales, the moment you could buy the console without the Kinect it became a lot more popular. Ok it helped that the console is also a lot cheaper without the Kinect but I think a lot of people didn't like the idea of having the Kinect. I guess it could be fun to play games using the Kinect with friends, but just you playing solo after a long day of school or work? No I don't think that's something people are looking forward to.

So we'll always use controllers?

I don't know about that, I mean the future will change things for us and looking at how we use phones now it wouldn't suprise me if that will also happen to the way we play games. I know that Nintendo is quite experimental with their consoles and controllers, which is interesting but hasn't really lead to huge succes. The WiiU is a good example of that, it didn't sell so well and it kind of shows that people aren't interested in these type of things just yet. Maybe the next generation will be more interested in controlling characters in a game with your body or using touchscreen pads to control characters in a game, but for now people just like to press button on a controller to control a character in a game. Maybe it's not the most exciting way to play games but it works and why would you want to change something that works?
