Looking back at.....X-Squad!
I´m not suprised if you´ve never heard of this game, it wasn´t a very populair game on the Playstation 2 about ten years ago. But for me it was a fun game to play, it´s also one of the first squad based games I´ve played. Sure I´ve played games where you´re in teams but I don´t think I´ve ever played a game before where you´re a part of a squad and you can assign orders to your other squad members. Of course in X-Squad that was quite simple and not that impressive if you compare it to modern games but it still left a good memory in my gaming years!
You play as the leader of X-Squad and you have three other members in your team. They all have their own speciality and also favourite weapon. You have your infiltrator that likes to use a sniper rifle, a hacker with a smg and the heavy weapons specialist that prefers some serious fire power! You play as the leader of the squad and you can use whatever weapon you prefer. You often split up during missions and that makes it a bit more tough because instead of four members you´re down to two and that usually means being more careful!
I think X-Squad wasn´t that difficult, but what makes it interesting to me is that it was a game that was ahead of its time. Because now you have plenty of squad based games and I´m not saying we have those games because of X-Squad but I do think that it helped me getting familiar with squad based games. Because later I played the Mass Effect trilogy where you also have your own squad and you can give orders, then there is Fuse that also has the same idea as X-Squad but also Fuse didn´t really became that popular. In CoD Ghosts you have squad mode where you can customize your own squad and assign duties to your members, which is nice and of course decide what type of weapons and equipment they´re going to use.
X-Squad is one of those forgotten games from a time long ago that never got the popularity it deserved, it´s a simple game that is a lot of fun to play! I wish more games would be like that, it doesn´t always have to be difficult and fun is definately something you´d like to see in a game. I really hope we´ll see more squad based games, I think the Division might finally give us a squad game we´ve all been waiting for. But instead of dealing with bots that don´t always make the smart moves you get human players in your squad that might still make not such smart moves, at least you can communicate and hopefully have a lot of fun playing games like that!
