Looking back at.....Mercenaries!
Have you ever played this game on the Xbox? Yes I´m talking about the first Xbox and not the Xbox One, ah let´s just assume you know what I mean. Mercenaries is one of those games that could´ve been great but turned out to be a bit mediocre, which isn´t a bad thing but still I feel like it could´ve been so much better. Because the things you can do in that game are a lot of fun and choosing your own main character is also nice, eventhough I would prefer to create my own character. But the freedom you have in this game is in my opinion the biggest strength of this game.
Do what you want whenever you want to do it? That´s one way of saying it, because you choose your own missions and there are often multiple ways of completing a mission. You can use stealth or go in guns blazing! But you can also call in support or just drop a bomb from the sky on a base to clean up some scumbags. When you´re low on health you can order a support package that will heal you and give you some ammo, which is a good thing when you´re close to death. You earn money by completing missions, that you can pick yourself, and you spend money on calling in support or buying new weapons. Most vehicles in the game are for you to use whenever you want to, which makes a tank a good vehicle to knock on the front door!
What´s the story in this game? You´re going after some Korean (I think) General that poses a threat against the free world, so you´re a mercenary that is hired to deal with him. But before you can get to him you have to deal with a lot of other people, often other soldiers and officers that work under that General. Some missions are easy while others are quite tough, there isn´t a real balance and sometimes a mission can be quite long and annoying because it suddenly turned bad real fast! But because you have so many tools to your disposal you shouldn´t have too much trouble with that. Still the infinite spawn points can be quite annoying and you dying quite fast might also make it less pleasant to play this game.
So an open world game, is there a co-op in this game? No not in this game, but in the second Mercenaries game there is a co-op mode, but I doubt you´ll find many people who still play that game. Still it´s a lot of fun to play the Mercenaries games, you have a lot of things to do and you can choose how you want to do it. Even solo you have plenty of things to do and it´s always fun blowing things up and trust me when I say that there are plenty of things to blow up!
