Do friends influence which games you play?
If you have friends that play games just like you then it´s not weird that they influence you, because you probably want to play with your friends and that means that sometimes you´d buy games you normally wouldn´t buy. For example a game that has a co-op or that only has a multiplayer mode. If you don´t have any friends that play games then you´ll feel less likely to buy one of these games, because playing solo in multiplayer isn´t always that much fun. It´s not a suprise that you often see friends playing together in co-op or multiplayer games.
Sometimes friends can even influence you to try a whole new genre, for me that happened with survival horror games. I first played Nintendo games on the NES and SNES so I didn´t had much experience with survival horror games. But when I bought a Playstation a friend of mine told me about Resident Evil and Silent Hill, I borrowed both games from him and I loved playing those games. It´s thanks to that friend that I actually started playing survival horror games and I can´t see myself stop playing games like that anymore. But I can´t help but wonder if I would´ve played games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill if I he didn´t recommend them to me, because when a friend tells you that a game is good you´re more likely to listen than when a douchebag in a commercial tells you that it´s good. Never underestimate the power of old fashioned advertisement!
But what happens when your friends stop playing a certain game? Does that mean you also stop playing that game? I do think it has some influence on you, because when my friends played a lot of Team Fortress 2 I played that also a lot but when they stopped I didn´t play that game that much anymore. Don´t get me wrong is a fun game but it´s just more fun if you play with your friends, playing with random strangers usually isn´t as much fun as playing with your friends. But if a game is really that much fun then you´ll probably play it anyway, I guess it really depends on you.
It´s not that your friends just influence you with co-op and multiplayer games, even singleplayer games are something that your friends can influence you with. Talking about a new cool game that you have to play is often how it starts, you get curious and before you know it you´re playing that game yourself. But sometimes you have nice friends that actually let you borrow the game and then you can find out yourself without having to buy it yourself, which is nice because you can´t buy all the games you want!
