Action vs stealth
When I first started playing games it was all about action, you see an enemy you shoot the enemy! You didn´t really think how you could sneak past the enemy, well I guess you had Metal Gear Solid games in those days but of course it was nothing as what we have now. These days it´s all about making choices, do you want to go in loud or do you want to go in quietly? In several games you get this choice, often with an additional reward at the end. Sneaking around will probably be more rewarding but it will also take more time, also one mistake means you have to go in loud! If you prefer action than you just go in guns blazing, it´s easier but at the same time also more difficult if they game actually encourages you to be stealthy.
Why pick the hard way when there is an easier way? That´s how I thought for a long time, I didn´t like to be bothered with stealth because it would slow me down. Also the frustrations of failure only made me want to shoot enemies in cold blood anyway, so why would you bother with stealth? Well if done correctly then you can do massive damage to enemies without his or her friends knowing what you did. This means you can take out groups of enemies without getting any damage, of course this will require some stealth skill on your part. It´s not an easy road for a beginner but once you´ve gotten better then you´ll probably like it. In games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell it´s just so much fun to be this person that takes out everyone without them knowing that you´re there. Even when they figure out that you´re there then it´s still funny to see them freak out over every little noise they hear, so a sadist will probably have a great time! But stealth isn´t always the fastest way to get through a game, but I do think it´s more rewarding.
Why use stealth when you can shoot your way forward? Exactly! What´s the point of stealth when you can also shoot your way through a game? Well the game will probably become more difficult when everyone knows where you are, when they all go in cover and await your arrival so they can shoot a lot of holes in you! Of course for the experts it´s probably not that much of a problem, but if you´re not so good then you can have a difficult time to get through a game if you have to fight enemies that are waiting for you around every corner. That will also slow you down, because running into battle while the enemies are in cover is a good way to get yourself killed! Still it does feel good to be the bad ass that kills everyone and survives impossible odds. I kind of like this strategy when everything else seems to fail or when I´m just pissed off and I want to blow off some steam!
Sometimes when you play a game in one way it can be fun to try to play it in another way, for example in Payday 2 I first played as an enforcer/technician and then I switched to a mastermind/ghost. Both types of sets play completely different and it´s quite clear that one is based on action and the other is based on stealth. Especially when you play solo you might want to play with stealth, because getting all the attention of dozens of enemies might be too much for you! Even if GTA V you have options to play it stealthy in some missions, it´s actually a lot of fun to try both ways though. But for the best result I would really recommend doing things stealthy! Another game that is also a lot of fun to play is Assassin´s Creed, especially in multiplayer you´ll see the difference between action gamers and stealth gamers. Because some people will just run around and kill people in a rush, while others patiently wait on a location or move around slowly and strike when their target gets too close. I really love those stealth kills, especially when you hear the suprised reaction from the other player. Also it gets you a lot more points if you kill other players with stealth instead of running around like a loon. Unfortunately not every game is that good when it comes to a good stealth experience, so if the frustrations become too much then I don´t think anyone would mind if you just go in shooting!
