Playing solo in online multiplayer
A couple of years ago when City of Heroes was still available I often played solo, in a mmorpg that is often frowned upon because a lot of gamers think that you need to play with others. This goes up to the point where I got messages from people spewing their hatred towards people like me, I guess it´s forbidden to play solo in an online multiplayer...or not? Personally I think that you should do what you want in an online world, of course that doesn´t mean that you make the lives of other people miserable in the game. But I think that if you prefer to play solo then that shouldn´t be a problem, maybe you disagree but who are you to say that someone is wrong just for having a different opinion and preference in gaming? Besides just because I prefer to play solo doesn´t mean that I don´t play with others, but sometimes it´s just more fun for me to play solo.
How do you survive all alone in the online world? If you have no friends that play the game that you play then playing solo is not that strange, of course you can play with strangers but that doesn´t always lead to a good gaming experience. But at the same time you might make some new friends, I guess it really depends on the game and on you. When other players can kill you on sight then it´s safer to be in a team, but that doesn´t mean that you can relax then! Sometimes you´ll encounter other teams and that often leads to a battle, especially when one of the teams is bigger then the other. This is often one of the reasons why I prefer to avoid teams, because where a lot of people are there is often trouble not far away. When I play solo I can move faster, I don´t get noticed that quickly and when people decide to attack you they´ll often underestimate you because you´re on your own. Of course a team that works well together might be problematic, but sometimes it´s just better to be in a team. I won´t disagree with that, but when it comes to personal preference then playing solo is really my favourite way of playing.
Does the amount of single player games have an influence on your preference in gaming? I can´t really say, because I´ve met people who play a lot of single player games but still prefer to play with others. I´ve also played a lot of single player games and maybe that has influences me enough to prefer to play solo. But what definately plays a big part in your style of playing is if you have friends that play games with you or not, because without gaming friends you´ll find yourself less likely to play in a team. Sure you can always try a team with strangers but I think it´s more fun to play with people that you know. Not just because it´s more fun, but also strategy works better if you actually communicate with eachother instead of being in a team where no one says anything (or at least anything useful). I guess if I had more friends that played the same games as me then I might have been more interested in playing with others, but in a way you adapt to what you have and in my case that´s solo survival.
Are games friendly to solo players in online multiplayer? This isn´t always the case, often you´ll find yourself forced to play with others if you want to get things done. In GTA Online all missions seem to require at least two people to play, otherwise you get an instant fail if you try it solo. Strangely enough it says 1-2 or 1-4 players under the title of the mission, which would mean that you should be able to play it solo if you want. Anyway you do have a solo mode, but you obviously don´t have deathmatch and team deathmatch. Also activities that take at least two people to start are gone, which leaves golf and that´s important to increase your strength. Strangely enough when you start a match you´ll still find yourself sometimes in the company of others, so maybe things don´t work as well as they should be. At least it´s nice that there are different modes to play and eventhough a lot of the content is based on playing with others, there is still a solo friendly path you can walk in GTA Online. It´s a slow path, but it will still get you where you want to go. Which probably says a lot about solo players, it´s not about getting there as soon as possible but getting there in your own time!
