Scary games

As a kid I´d watch a horror movie with my parents, of course they didn´t always realize that and yes that sometimes gave me nightmares. But when I would be watching the movie I´d be ok, because I had my parents there with me. When I first started playing survival horror games I wasn´t that interested in trying that, because I still had thoughts about the nightmares that came along with my horror experiences. But a friend gave me Resident Evil and I loved it, sure the moment the dogs jump through the window I was probably jumping against the ceiling but it was fun! But it was really Silent Hill that convinced me to buy more survival horror games, because that game is just so good!

I didn´t even realize it at first but there are a lot of scary games, at least games that take you off the safe path of Mario and his friends. Let´s not forget I used to be a die hard Nintendo gamer, so horror wasn´t something I was used to in games. But games like Alone in the dark and Doom helped me get more used to horror elements in games. I got comfortable enough to play at night with headphones on, the way survival horror games are meant to be played. Unfortunately that left some scars on my mind, for example I still don´t feel comfortable in a hospital thanks to Silent Hill and a young woman called Lisa. So is it stupid to expose yourself to that? Personally I don´t think so, it´s good to face your fears and try to conquer them. Because staying afraid your whole life or running away from a challenge isn´t really who I am, wouldn´t you rather face your fears than run away from them?

But now it´s Halloween and it´s probably one of my favourite moments of the year, eventhough Halloween isn´t really that much celebrated in my country I still see a lot of pumpkins and costumes. This is actually the perfect time to play scary games, to see how much you can take before you freak out. I think deep down inside we all want to feel safe, but there is also a part of us that wants to explore and maybe without realizing it finding danger. Perhaps it´s the same feeling that drives us to play survival horror games, to look for danger and facing your fears. Maybe even to push your limits. I would like to believe that I can take much more now than ten years ago, thanks to playing scary games and finishing them. It might seem like a small victory to the rest of the world, but for yourself it can be quite the accomplishment!

Happy Halloween everyone!
