The sequel that never came
Have you ever played a game that was so good that you really hoped that they would make another one? But unfortunately it never came. Maybe it´s for the best sometimes, because when a good game gets a sequel then it´s always the question if it´s as good as the first one. At least that´s what you would hope, it would be even better if the sequel is even more fun than the first game. But that´s quite rare, I haven´t played many games that were actually better than the first game. So that kind of makes you wonder, do you really want to see a sequel on a very good game?
I think it really depends what the developers are doing, I mean if it´s just more of the same then I can´t really say that I´m that excited for that. But that doesn´t mean that you want a completely different game, the best thing that can happen if they take good things from the first game and add new interesting things in the sequel. Seems simple right? Well looking at a long list of failures I´d say it´s not! But what one person likes the other hates, so it´s not easy to please people with these things. That´s why I´m not a big fan of developers that listen too much to fans, sure it´s nice if you look for feedback but usually the loudest voices on the internet aren´t the ones you want to listen to! Sometimes it´s better to stick with something, especially if your story is based on that. Constantly changing the story to keep the fans happy doesn´t seem like a solid story, maybe it works out but it seems like you´re just trying to please others. Isn´t it better to just do your own thing?
When I finished Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic I was really hoping they would make another game and eventually they did. Unfortunately this game was not quite how I´d hope it would be. Not only are the main characters from the first game nowhere in sight (well there is that one moment but really does that count?), you also have a story that is just not that interesting. When I look at the story of Revan then the story of the excile just falls into nothing for me. Sure the game looks good and I´ve had fun with it, but really this isn´t the sequel that I wanted! In a way it´s even worse when you have to wait a long time for a sequel and that the game then disappoints. I think Duke Nukem fans know what I´m talking about. But what about a sequel that never comes?
A lot of people are looking forward to Half Life 3, Left for Dead 3 and Team Fortress 3. Will we ever see these games or is this just more wishful thinking? Personally I would love to see these games, because with all games I think the sequel was better than the first game. So that really gives me hope for the third one, but so far things are very quiet on any news about that. As fans we can only hope, that seems lame but that´s just the way things are.
