Sinful Sunday: Being a fanatic gamer
Do you know what a fanatic gamer is? It usually means that you like to win and often take games a bit too serious. It doesn't mean that you don't have fun playing games, but you do go out of your way to win and succeed while others are pretty much there to have a good time. Do you recognize yourself in that? Well if you do then I bet your friends are happy to play with you, I know my friends are always happy to play games with me...not!
What makes fanatic gamers so annoying?
It's often the intensity of the moment. For example when I played Mario Kart 64 with my girlfriend at the time and a friend I gave them a headstart, yes I was that cocky, and then gave it my all to still beat them. They were just playing for fun but all I could see was winning. In my defense it's really fighting, racing and sport games that bring out this side of me the most. Which is why I prefer not to play these games and absolutely not with other people. The annoying part is that the fanatic gamer will always go for the win instead of just having fun and some people can be extremely annoying winners as well, so that also makes you like them less. It's not fun playing with people that only care about winning, because when everyone in the group of friends is having fun then there is this guy that keeps winning and rubbing letting everyone know that he or she has won. No matter how much you like this person, at that point you just want to punch him or her.
Do you know that you're a fanatical gamer?
It was never a secret for me, I already knew this wil board games where I would do everything in my power to win and I would win almost all the time. What often happens is that you get more loud and more of a jerk during the game, so instead of being helpful you start telling people that they suck and that you could beat them with one hand tied behind your back. I've also had moments where I would freak the fuck out over nothing. I was playing with my girlfriend (not long after that she wasn't my girlfriend anymore, gee I wonder why) City of Heroes and during one of the bank heist missions I wanted to pick up a marker, you pretty much have to walk over it to get it. So I was trying to find it while time was running out, at that point I got really upset and started to freak out and yelled at her. You can imagine that she didn't like that and it was the last time we played that game together. In the end it was of course not worth it and I know that, but in the moment it was all I could think of. Which is why you should never get too involved with a game, because in the end a game is just a game and it doesn't really matter. It's easy to say now but I know that I'll probably make the same mistake again if another moment like that happens. I want to be believe that being a bit older and hopefully wiser makes me less of a fanatic gamer but in truth I doubt you can truly stop being a fanatic gamer. Well maybe if you stop playing games...
How can you be less fanatic?
I like to avoid certain type of games. For me fighting, racing and sport games are the worst and I prefer to avoid these type of games unless I'm playing on my own. But even then I would prefer not to play these games because they really bring out the worst in me. What also helps is to see games as just games, don't get too invested and don't put too many hours in the game in a short time. When you play a game non stop for days then you become more fanatic, even small things can irritate you when something goes wrong or not as you thought they would go. Take a break, play fun and relaxing games. But above all go outside and get some fresh air, that's probably the best way to cool down a bit. You should also avoid games that can destroy friendships, a good example of that is Uno. I've seen so many people play this game and a lot of times people get mad at eachother. Even if this is just for a short time and can be funny to see it's of course not fun when you get mad at your friends or they get mad at you just because of a game. So know what kind of games you're playing and it might also be a good idea that if you play a certain game that can make you go super fanatic then it might be nice that you warn your friends. They might not know you that well or just not know that side of you, it's really shocking when someone sees how a good friend turns into a big jerk in a game. In the end it's just not worth it, unless you got a pretty solid friendship that can take a hit. The best way to be less fanatic is just to have fun, let go of your urge to win all the time and just have a good time. This might be difficult for some people but it's often the best way to be less fanatic in games.
