Movie Monday: Underworld Blood Wars
More than a decade ago I had this girlfriend that was really into vampires and all the other supernatural things. She introduced me to the Underworld movies and I have to admit eventhough I'm not really into the whole vampire thing the movies are fun to watch. Now many years after the first movie we have the fifth movie in the Underworld series called Underworld Blood Wars and as the name implies there is going to be a bloody war between the vampires and the lycans. But is this movie still watchable or have the Underworld movies turned into direct to dvd crap?
Selene is back?
As fans of the first couple of movies you can be happy to see that Selene is back and she does some quite a lot of killing, but she seems older and slower. All the power she held in the previous movies seems to have vanished as she has trouble beating some of her opponents. But that doesn't make her less of a badass! So eventhough Selene is back she's not quite the Selene you remember, but there is a moment in the movie where she will learn new tricks which will make her strong again or maybe even stronger than before. It's just a bit rough to see her go through these moments where lesser opponents seem to be able to beat her, eventhough they don't really play fair.
Is this a good Underworld movie?
If with good you mean as good as the first couple of movies then I would have to admit and say that this movie is a bit less interesting. Not because there is a lack of action or other things going on but it feels like you've already seen most of it and when you get to the part of the new powers you just wondered why it took so long to get there. There are some revelations in this movie so if you've been following the story, this movie fits pretty good on the previous movie Underworld Awakening, then you'll be happy to see that they pretty much pick up where they left off but without Selene's daughter, which isn't really a bad thing in my opinion. I think what the Underworld movies miss is a new enemy, we all know the fight between the vampires and the lycans but what if a completely new enemy would surface? I think that would be more interesting than seeing the same enemies but with new powers. It's just my opinion though, maybe some people would disagree.
Is this movie worth checking out?
For more than one reason I would say. The fans will probably like the fighting and the violence but for those that enjoy a good story you can also get some of that because Underworld Blood Wars dives a bit deeper into the story of David, who turns out to have a rather interesting backstory. There is once again a traitor and some team work between the vampires and lycans, in the end it's nothing new and I must admit that this doesn't really bother me that much because in the end it's still a fun movie to watch. Besides watching Kate Beckinsale in her shiny outfit isn't really punishment for your eyes either. I think it's worth checking out this movie, but if you haven't seen the previous Underworld movies I would definitely advice you to do that first. Otherwise this movie might be a bit confusing and will contain several spoilers. Underworld Blood Wars isn't the best movie in the Underworld series but definitely a fun movie to watch and in my opinion better than the previous movie Underworld Awakening.
