For Honor (open beta)

I decided to jump into For Honor and see for myself how good or how bad this game is. I have to admit that I was a bit surprised, in a good way, because the game is actually fun to play. I expected things to be a bit less good but with low expectations things usually turn out to be better. What I really like are the different characters or heroes in this game, because the idea is the same but they still play quite different if you compare them. I'm not completely convinced if this is the game for me but I'm definitely interested in playing some more!

Different ways to play?

Unfortunately the open beta only has multiplayer for you but you can practice against bots if you don't feel comfortable playing against other people, it can be a bit much learning all the moves and abilities just like that. Some characters/heroes are also more difficult to master than others. For example the Orochi and the Peace Keeper are fast and agile fighters but at the same time they have less armor and will take more damage when hit. It's probably smart to start with an easier character that has more health and requires less skill to use effecively in combat. For example the Raider, Kensei or Warden. Just keep in mind that these heroes are slower and more experienced players will most likely be able to block your attacks and deal damage in return. You can also duel people in a 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2 match, this can be fun but also very frustrating when you face people that use cheap tricks like trying to kick you off the map or into spikes and team up on one player to get a quick kill. You can take your benefit with that but as a new player you will most likely have a bad time. It's probably best to start with Dominion, which is a domination type of match where you have to capture three points and earn up to a thousand points, at that point you can kill the enemy team for good as long as your team has more than a thousand points. Team work and strategy play a huge role with this, because thinking you're going to make it on your own is a mistake!

Strategy instead of hack and slash?

If you go in with the Dynasty Warriors type of gameplay in mind then you'll have a bad time, people don't win by spamming buttons but by effectively blocking and then counter attack at the right moment. This isn't something you'll master in one or two matches, it could take a lot longer and as long as you suck at blocking things will be hard on you. Also keep in mind that you have a stamina bar, so if you go crazy with attacking then you'll run out of stamina and you'll become an easy target! You can read an enemy move with the red arrows on screen that will tell you what kind of attack he or she will make, so if you're quick or you can predict their move then you're good, if you can dodge the attack then that can also work in your advantage but if you keep taking hits without being able to hit the enemy then things are getting frustrating real fast. As much as you want to hack and slash I would not recommend it because a more experienced player will destroy you! Play smart and use tactics, it's the best way to survive.

Is it worth checking out the open beta?

Why not? It's free and you can see for yourself if this game is something for you. The open beta doesn't show you all the game has to offer but it should give you a good impression if this game is something for you or not. I really like the customization options and I hope that the full game has even more things to add to this list. I also like the fight system but I still struggle with it, so hopefully a lot of practice allows me to get a bit better. There are nine playable hero characters, the full game has twelve, so you should be able to check out most of them as you get enough steel, currency in this game, after the tutorial to unlock most of them. I like checking out new character and trying out new fighting styles, it's really interesting how certain heroes play in this game and to find out what works best for you. Anyway good luck and have fun in the For Honor open beta!
