It's just a game?!!!

As a kid I had to hear this a lot, most times when I got pissed at the game and someone would always mention that it's just a game. This didn't make me feel better, it gave me more the impression that the person saying that it's just a game had no idea what he or she was talking about. But is it really that important to win? Isn't more about having fun? Well...

Is it just a game?

As a kid, teenager and adult I kept hearing people telling me it's just a game. Usually people that don't play games themselves love to tell you that it's just a game, but what the hell do they know? They never play games so they don't know what's going on. But when you get older you do see their point because why am I getting mad or upset? Oh I lost this multiplayer match but hey I can always win the next one or the one after that. That's probably how a mature and responsible person would react, I on the other hand want to win as much as I can. Usually for a reason of course. In Overwatch I want to earn the free loot boxes in arcade mode, in For Honor I want to get enough wins to get achievements and in Rainbow Six Siege I get more renown when I win. Sure it's not super important but it's nice when I get it and I like to get it fast. The worst thing is spending hours, days, weeks, months or maybe even years to get something you really want. For example beating a game, getting a achievements or maybe some other type of reward. It sucks when you keep failing and this builds up frustration that will sooner or later make you mad at the game. So yeah maybe it is just a game but in fact there is usually more at stake than just winning or losing and as little that might mean to some to others it can mean a lot!

Games are no longer just games?

There was a time when games were just games, but now games are so much more. For some they're a way of life and others actually earn money playing games. So games are no longer just games, they've become a lot more than that to some people. But something that has stayed the same is people trying to have fun while playing a game. This hasn't changed and hopefully this stays the same even after a hundred years. Because the moment you stop having fun you have to ask yourself why you still play games. If you're an achievement or trophy hunter you see games also more than just games, they're challenges where you want to get as many achievements or trophies in a game with the ultimate goal of getting all the achievements or trophies. This isn't always easy but that makes it more fun in the first place, because if you would earn achievements or trophies for almost anything you do then it's less fun, but by actually doing things not everyone can do it becomes more fun. Especially now that you can see with achievements how rare they are, which gives you a more accomplished feeling when you get one of these rare achievements. Of course games are still games, but just keep in mind that to some people they're more than that. As much as some people just play for fun there are others that have more reasons to play games, wether that's for their job or for their own personal glory. One thing remains the same and that's that we all just want to have a good time playing games, so let's try to keep that going for all of us!
