Sinful Sunday: I'm an edgelord? WTF is that?

Has anyone ever accused you of being an edgelord? It really sounded like someone made that up but apparently it's a real word but I think people are calling other people this way too easily. For example I was playing some Overwatch and I was messing up the other team as Reaper, so a guy on that team called me an edgelord. Of course I didn't know what that meant, so I sent a message back with a questionmark. Of course no reply, which doesn't surprise me because people are usually not that talkative online unless they feel like insulting or being toxic. So I had to look it up...

WTF is an edgelord?

Well that's someone that is edgy. In the description I found online it says that this is someone that cheers for mass murder and have opinions that are strongly nihilistic. So this random person online got this vibe from me after just one match? Clearly people online just say random crap because they're salty or just can't handle the fact that they got beaten. Some people do call Reaper an edgelord because he's the kind of guy in the game that screams die die die when he does his ultimate, I guess that does make him look a bit like an edgelord. But if you read his backstory you kind of figure out why he is the way he is and we don't even have all the answers so once again a character is being judged without having all the facts on the table. I guess that is the world we live in, people will judge you and often just based on a first impression or random encounter online.

Edgelord is the new way of saying that you're a douchebag?

I get the feeling that it is, because I never heard this term before playing Overwatch and that isn't even a year old. The thing is that people will just say it wether it's true or not but just pretty much say it out of frustration or ignorance, both don't really make it believable and you shouldn't even bother listening to that crap. People will judge you and you often get hate for having succes, especially if this comes at the cost of someone else. So when someone calls you an edgelord it's probably someone who just learned a new word and probably doesn't even know what it really means. Others will just judge you on one moment or encounter online, because somehow that defines you. I guess certain words lose their popularity over time so new words are invented or they use already existing words and glue a whole lot of meanings to it until it just because a standard insult. For example calling someone gay doesn't always mean that you think this person is gay, it's often used as an insult that implies that you're lame, stupid or something else negative. I doubt most people that would call you gay or use some other other that has the same meaning actually mean that you suck. Edgelord could be the same, eventhough I haven't heard many people use it so far. So it could just disappear after a couple of months. My advice? Let people talk, who cares what some random douchebag says online.
