Resident Evil 7, everything you ever wanted?

A lot of people say that Resident Evil 7 makes Resident Evil scary again, well they're not wrong but is this really a Resident Evil game? After playing the game for quite a bit and being in certain situations I have to admit that I recognize Resident Evil elements but at the same time feel like a complete stranger in this game, which is weird because I'm a Resident Evil veteran that has played all the previous Resident Evil games. So the question is, is Resident Evil 7 everything you ever wanted or is it something else?

Resident Evil 7 is different?

Yeah you can definitely say that because the game is different, sure there are elements that are the same but playing the game in first person perspective is already a big game changer. This doesn't just make the game more scary but also makes it a bit more difficult for me to hit enemies. Melee in first person view is horrible, I just hack and slash and end up dead half of the time. Probably because I miss too many times and I don't really notice that because I have to hack and slash wildly if I want to survive. Aiming your gun is also quite a challenge for someone like me, because when your aim is terrible then you're going to have a rough time landing headshots on enemies. Especially in a boss fight you're in trouble when the boss is just marching at you and you just miss too many shots. A lot of things are also right in your face with the first person view, there is no escape (unless you close you eyes) and a death can be a long and brutal one. This can make the game scary for some people, if this happens too many times it just annoys me. Oh yeah dying again to this shit, great...

What's the same and what's different?

Several things stay the same and I must admit that this is interesting considering that they're leaning on stuff they used already twenty years ago in Resident Evil. The herbs have returned and yes you can once again mix herbs with chemicals that create some powerful medicine or more bullets. The map looks also a lot like what you saw in the Spencer mansion in Resident Evil, which is nice because I really love that game. The plantation, where the Baker family lives, is huge and offers you a lot of rooms and areas to explore but at the same time you have to be careful. There aren't zombie dogs that can jump through the window but a member of the Baker family can show up and that means you have to run. This feels wrong in a Resident Evil game, eventhough you do have Resident Evil 3 where running was sometimes a good strategy when you encountered Nemesis, and I can't help but get annoyed when I need to get to an area but there's this asshole blocking the way and you have to sit and wait for this person to move without getting spotted. Some people might like this, I personally find it annoying. You do find a weapon but somehow I don't feel much safer with it, some enemies just take a lot of hits to die so you could just as much run away than engage the enemy because you will just waste ammo. This isn't that different when you played Resident Evil games on a higher difficulty, especially the first three games, so hopefully you haven't forgot how to dodge enemies and run for the next room!

Is this game worth playing?

In my opinion it is, mostly thanks to the spooky environment and feelings you get from sneaking around in the plantation. The monsters aren't super scary but trying  to escape from the can be quite the experience when you don't know where you need to go. The bosses can be quite intense but once you know what you need to do they're not a big challenge. I think that Resident Evil 7 is definitely a step in the right direction, it really looks cool and can be quite intimidating at times. But what makes me like this game a lot is the adventure of exploring the mansion and finding new things, if this means dodging creepy people that live in the building then so be it! I don't think this game is for everyone though, the game has some very brutal moments where you better have a strong stomach because things get really intense! Eventhough this is a Resident Evil game it doesn't always feel like it's a Resident Evil game, but that's not really a problem because it's a fun experience and gives you something else than your typical first person shooter or wannabe scary game. This game is actually quite scary at moments and most of it is just in your head, but that's usually where the scariest things come from...
