Luring people back into multiplayer
As you probably know it's double xp weekend in Black Ops 3 and it's the Iron Banner event in Destiny the Taken King, but does this really lure you back to multiplayer or are you going to continue playing the game you were playing before the double xp weekend and the Iron Banner event? It's tempting, but going back to the same 'old' games can be less fun than playing new games. I guess it really depends on how invested you are in a game.
Double xp is worth going back?
If you don't like slow leveling up in multiplayer then double xp (in some games it's even triple xp) can really help you out! You get to a new level faster and get acces to new weapons and powers faster, which is perfect for people who don't have a lot of time to play or people who don't enjoy grinding. Even if you don't like multiplayer that much you will be tempted to give it a try now, because you'll level up faster and have a better chance to get to higher levels in a short time instead of wasting days on playing multiplayer hoping to get to a high level.
Do you like special events?
Some events are actually a lot of fun, for example the Halloween event in Destiny the Taken King was fun and usually several other games have their own way of celebrating certain days. This gives you a chance to collect some unique items you only get in that event, so if you're into unique items than special events are the place to be! But not every event is worth your time, for example the Iron Banner event in Destiny the Taken King is one of those events that's just a load of shit. Why? Because you spend days on earning enough reputation to get to higher levels and for what? To get one or two armor pieces and/or weapons that are super spectacular, what's even worse is that they're on a low level and you have to level them up higher to make them actually useful. If you're a collector you're also out of luck because you can only earn two of the four pieces in one event, which means you have to wait a month for the next Iron Banner event to get the other pieces. Also your reputation points are reset so you can start all over again, but hey if that's your thing then good luck with that! I'd rather do something else with my time.
But what if you hate multiplayer?
Then you should probably ignore double xp weekends and special events because you're most likely not going to enjoy yourself. There will be more people in multiplayer and a lot of them won't be fun to play with, but that's a whole different story. The point is that if you don't like multiplayer then it's probably smart to stick to single player games, unless you have some friends that like to play with you and you could do that. But I would suggest staying out of random multiplayer, that is if you seriously dislike online multiplayer. Stick with what you like and what makes you happy, no matter what games try to lure you back it's just not worth it if you're not into multiplayer.
