Looking back at.....Fallout 3!
With Fallout 4 just a day away it makes sense to look back at Fallout 3, the game that got me into the Fallout games and that is a lot of fun to play! In a way someone tells you a story in Fallout 3, but instead of listening you play that story and can make your own decisions in that story. I think that's one of the reasons why so many people love Fallout 3 and why a lot of people are excited about Fallout 4. It's the possibilities and the choices you make which then hopefully lead to a unique experience, this doesn't just mean that it's fun to play but it also makes it fun to play the game again and try something else.
The chosen one?
You start the game when your character is born, you can already choose the looks of your character (you see a type of prediction of the future you on a screen and you can alter the looks there) and of course decide if you want to play as a male or female character. Then you make a small jump into your toddler years, there you can decide what your attributes will be (for example is your character strong, smart, charismatic or perceptive). Then you make another jump in time, but you're still a kid. It's your birthday party and things don't go according to plan, some people aren't happy to be there and the robot messes up the cake, but your father in the game makes it unforgettable by giving you a BB gun and you take your first steps as a killer...eh hunter in this game. The next jump in time brings you to your graduation, you take the G.O.A.T. (I forgot what it means exactly but it will determine what your job will be in the Vault) and at the same time it also decides what your skills will be. The good thing is that if you don't like the outcome you can change it. The last jump in time you make is when your father is gone and left you in the Vault. So it's up to you to escape the Vault and go after him. That's the start of an adventure that will take you to amazing places and interesting characters!
A huge world!
I remember how overwhelming the world was in Fallout 3 the first time I stepped outside the Vault, I could go in any direction I wanted and explore until I would run into trouble (there's never a lack of enemies). But with some luck you quickly find the nearest town and make some friends there, unfortunately not everyone is so nice in that town and you can quickly make a huge decision. Wether you want to blow up the town or save it. If you want an evil character then the choice is easily made, but if you're good then you might want to save the town. It's just the first step (of many) in this game and things you can do, it's not something you have to do but what you can do and there are a lot of missions out there that give you this option. It also helps leveling you up and get you new skills which help you in surviving and finding new stuff. You can focus on the main story line or just go your own way and do what you want to do, the freedom is big in this game and you're not being forced to stick with the main story.
You're not alone.
In such a big open world you can feel alone, but you have companions that follow you around (unfortunately they can get killed) and help you. Also the towns and other places on the map are full of characters that bring this game to life. You can sneak around and find out what they're up to or even talk with them and get new missions. Everyone seems to have a story and has something for you to do, which might seem annoying to you but that actually helps you level up and explore the game. Some quests are ridiculous while others can be amazing, sometimes they're both! Once again the choice is yours and you can complete missions sometimes in multiple ways, so are you going to save someone or screw them over? This will determine if you're good or bad, you can also be neutral but that's a bit more tricky to accomplish, and it will also determine how people will react to you. When you're evil people will be afraid and/or hostile towards you, but if you're good people will like you and want to hang out with you. It's your game with your rules, you decide what happens! Fallout 3 is an amazing game and really a game you should play before starting with Fallout 4.
