Why do developers put collectibles in a game?
The opposite of fun in a game is frustration, for example not being able to beat a level and/or boss in a game or dealing with bad controls or camera positions. Collectibles are also frustrating, but somehow developers love putting these in a game. Why? To keep players busy? To add some extra background story, sometimes collectibles contain information, to the already existing world and characters in the game? It seems like an old trick to keep players in a game a bit longer than they would be otherwise, but do we really need collectibles for that?
Gamers hate collectibles?
Well not every gamer hates collectibles, there are some rare examples that even like collectibles, but usually people aren't that exited about collectibles and with good reason. You spend hours on finding items in a game just for an achievement or trophy and sometimes you even get a reward in the game. If there are less than 50 collectibles in a game it's not that bad, if it's over 50 then it's annoying, but if you need to collect more than a 100 there are several people out there that don't even bother collecting because they don't want to spend too much time on that. It does help when the game offers you maps or tracking abilities that help you find them, but at that point I completely lost the reason why the developers put them in a game. I mean if you're going to point out the collectibles then what is the point of collecting them? Then it's just some mindless bullshit you do in a game that feels like a complete waste of time!
You don't need to collect the collectibles?
That's right, you don't have to but if you like to earn achievements/trophies in a game then it often means you have to deal with the collectibles because there's usually an achievement or trophy that is tied to the collectibles. Another reason would be the reward you get for getting all collectibles, if that earns you a new weapons or power that can make a difference in the game then you can bet your ass on it that people will try to get all collectibles just for that reward. But achievements/trophies are usually enough reason to sucker some people into collecting the collectibles.
Games don't need collectibles?
I don't think that games need collectibles, because people that want to explore a game world will do that and don't need achievements/trophies for that and people that don't want to explore but do want to get achievements/trophies aren't happy with achievements/trophies tied to collectibles. So instead of wasting time on something a lot of people don't even like you could make an extra level in a game or add something else to make it interesting. Getting collectibles is dull and often feels like a waste of time, so why add this in so many games? There's nothing wrong with putting something in a game that gamers can collect, but keep it simple and definitely don't make it too much that it feels like you're wasting time. If you need items for a quest then that's fine, but keep the number of items you need low and keep it simple. I seriously doubt people like running around in a game looking for items when they could be doing something else like actually playing the game and not worrying about a hidden items somewhere. Well maybe that's just me but I bet there are more people that don't like collectibles and wish that they would stop appearing in games!
