Fallout 4 (first impression)

I must admit that this is the game I've been looking forward to all Summer and I can say in all honesty that this game is a lot of fun to play! It's a lot like Fallout 3 but with some nice improvements that make this game even more fun. For example your main character has a voice, you can put your own name in the game and there's a good chance the game recognizes it and uses it, you can build your own house and neighbourhood, you can track your missions now a lot easier as an arrow points out which way you need to go, you have some extreme weapon customization that allows you to create all kinds of weapons, the character customization is also pretty detailed and you can play as a male or female character so there's something for everyone! This is just a part of all the new things in Fallout 4 and I'm pretty certain that I probably haven't even discovered most of it!

Who are you?

You're someone from before the war, but then when all hell breaks loose you find your way into a Vault and wake up about 200 years later (I leave the details out in case you don't know and want to find out yourself). It's then up to you to figure out what happened and find a place in a ruined world. You'll quickly find friendly people, and a dog, but also unfriendly people that want to kill you. It becomes pretty clear that there are multiple ways of playing, the way where you help people or the way where you let people die or ask for money if they want your help. Depending on your choices people will react differently to you, for example I was nice and people like me and will ask for more help. But conversations aren't that simple, you can also be sarcastic or ask for more information before you agree to help or want to turn someone down.

The world is big?

Well I think by now we all know that but yes the world in Fallout 4 is pretty big and you have a lot of exploration to do if you want to see it all. In each area you'll find all types of people and/or creatures, some are friendly and some are not that friendly. Also don't be surprised to find a new mission while you're busy with a mission. It's up to you what you want to do and when you want to do it. Sometimes missions lead to new companions, people you meet and that want to travel with you, but sometimes it also leads to new areas or getting some nice rewards. I played the entire evening and I only made a little bit of progress in the game world, but to be honest I was busy with building houses and other structures in my sanctuary. Sanctuary? Well that's the name of where you used to live and where now a group of people have settled down, you can build things for them and of course for yourself. This allows you to create a safe zone for people and build your own community. This is very addictive and it wouldn't suprise me that a lot of people will spend hours on building something there!

S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and perks are back?

That's right and you get a nice map if you bought the hard copy, this allows you to keep track of all the things you can buy. With S.P.E.C.I.A.L. you can increase your strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. This unlocks new skills for you, in this game called perks, and that give you a better chance to survive out in the wild and help you find cool thing. For example with lockpicking or hacking computers, but you can also become a better shot or get more stealth thanks to these perks. What's really cool is that you don't need to get the top perks to get acces to the lower perks in the list. If you have a high enough level and enough points in one of the seven skill trees then you can unlock that and get a benefit from it. So with charisma you can skip the perk where you get items cheaper in shops and go immediately for the lady killer perk so you do more damage to female characters and can persuade them easier. I love this system and it works pretty good, you can also increase one of the seven skill trees, so if at the start you made your character very strong with strength but that came at the cost of intelligence then you can always increase the intelligence skill tree later with points when you level up.

Not quite the same as Fallout 3?

I heard from some people that this is too much like Fallout 3, most of these people aren't completely mistaken but it would be wrong to say that Fallout 4 is exactly like Fallout 3. For example in the V.A.T.S. menu you don't have all the time in the world anymore, because time doesn't stand still as in Fallout 3 but now enemies move around in slow motion which means you still need to think fast or else they'll get you! Your character speaks and you get multiple choices with answers, so it's not just yes and no anymore. You have now companions that are actually more than just a character that follows you, these are people or machines (and a dog) that follow you because they want to but if they don't like you they don't want anything to do with you anymore. So relationships will play a more important part in this game. You have a build system that makes some of the old Sims games look bad because the build system in Fallout 4 is pretty detailed and allows you to do a lot with only one press of the button. You also get a very detailed crafting system that gives you so many options and lets you create all kinds of weapons build from scrap. There is so much to do and so much to discover and I can't wait to play again because the game is so much fun! If you're a fan of Fallout 3 then I'm pretty certain that you'll like Fallout 4. They have some similarities but they're not the same game, Fallout 4 is a game you want to play if you like open world games that give you a lot of freedom and things to do. So what are you waiting for? Get your ass in Fallout 4!
