Games are an escape from reality?
I've heard several times from people how games have helped them through rough times in their life, because games take you out the real world and put you in a virtual world with infinite possibilities. Depending on which game you play you could do all kinds of things, wether that's shooting people in the face in a first/third person shooter or go on an epic quest in one of many (MMO)RPGs that take you into a fantasy world. It's a perfect way to forget about the crap you're dealing with at the moment, but sooner or later you have to go back to the real world.
Games are more than just games?
For some people this is difficult to believe and understand, how can a game be more than just a game? Well it's not that difficult because some games can mean everything for some people, which is exactly why they spend so much time playing that game. This doesn't always mean that it's an addiction, some people just have a lot of fun in a game and love to spend their time in that game. If it also helps them deal with problems or other bad things in their real life then that's a nice bonus.
How does a game help you deal with your problems?
It seems unbelievable but I'll try to explain it with an example. Let's say you lost someone dear to you, this could be a family member or a close friend, and you have a hard time dealing with it. It can make you feel helpless and give you a feeling that you're useless because there wasn't anything you could do to help. So when you play a game where you can help people and be of use then that helps you more than you would think because by helping these virtual characters you actually help yourself feel a bit better. So games aren't just an escape from reality, they're also a way of dealing with things that happened in real life. Sometimes that even works better than talking to a shrink, eventhough that can also have a possitive effect on you but not everyone feels comfortable talking about what troubles them.
So people need games in their life?
I wouldn't say that, I don't think that someone that has never played a game isn't living his or her life to the fullest. We all make different choices and take different paths, this means we don't all live our life the same way and I think it would be a mistake if we did. So some people have games in their life, that can help, and some people have other ways to deal with bad things that happened in their life. One way isn't really better than the other, but it's nice to know that there are games out there that can help you feel better. Even if it's just a little bit. Sometimes that can make all the difference in a difficult time.
