Looking back at.....Tomb Raider (2013)!
This is one of those games that got some mixed reactions, on one side the die hard Lara fans that didn't like this game because it didn't feel like the other Tomb Raider games and on the other side people with an open mind and willing to give this game a chance. I must admit that I was never a die hard Tomb Raider player, I kind of stopped playing these games after the third three games and I really welcomed this new version of Tomb Raider. So is Tomb Raider a good game? It's a great game!
Young and inexperienced.
What some people hate is something I actually like, to see Lara get started and turning into the woman we all recognize from the previous games. So no hotpants and dual wielding guns, just a cheerful and intelligent young woman. But she'll have to change quickly because things go bad pretty fast and danger lurks around every corner, which means you need to be ready to press the right buttons at the right time and figure out how things work. You learn how to craft items, how to hunt and eventually how to kill people. At first that goes slow but eventually you become quite good at it, up to the point where you drop bodies left and right and you hardly blink afterwards.
No tombs?
Another thing people hated was the lack of tombs in this game, sure there are some optional tombs but they're pretty small with just one puzzle in it. I think people were disappointed with that and I can't really blame them, but I don't think this game really needs tombs shoved in it. The game offers you a lot to do and a lot to see, so it's not like the game is boring without the big tombs! There is so much going on and there are so many moments where things go wrong really fast that you don't even have time to complain about the tombs because you're too busy trying to evade whatever the game is throwing at you!
Fresh is good!
This Tomb Raider is fresh and fresh is good! Because it made the Tomb Raider games faster, more fun and it also gave the character a new chance to amaze us and invite us to go on adventures with her. I don't think everyone was getting tired of the old Tomb Raider games but this game really gave Lara a new start and it's a great start with an interesting story. It's funny, sad, intense and an amazing adventure when you look back at it. It's thanks to this Tomb Raider game that I'm once more excited about the Tomb Raider games and I immediately got Rise of the Tomb Raider the moment it was released. I think Lara might have a great future ahead of her. I'm not saying it's all thanks to the 2013 version of Tomb Raider but it definitely gave the character and the Tomb Raider series fresh air and that makes everything (usually) a lot better!
