Sinful Sunday: Who needs friends?

I've never been a social type, but it's nice to have friends in your life if you need help or just for fun. But when games became more fun for me and also bigger and consumed more of my time I didn't always notice that I didn't talk with my friends for days and sometimes even weeks. At first they wanted to know what was going on, some were worried and others tried to contact me but when you don't check your phone then those messages don't have any effect. It's when you take a break from gaming or when you finish a game that you realize that a week has passed and you missed several messages. So games didn't really help me stay in touch with my friends, but it helps if your friends like to play games as well and preferably the same games as you.

Games ruin your social life?

It's possible, but to be honest this is something you do to yourself. Nobody forces you to play the game all the time! But some games are addicting and it's difficult to stop with a game when you're having a lot of fun playing it or when you want to keep playing it until you reach a checkpoint so your progress isn't lost. Unfortunately that checkpoint often become two checkpoints or a level and sometimes that keeps going until you reach the end of the game. You make a little bit of time to eat and sleep but then you're back behind your computer or console. It's not a healthy way to live and it doesn't really help you stay in touch with friends.

Who needs friends?

Well you don't need them, but life is more fun and comfortable if you have them. But it doesn't matter how many friends you have, unless you're one of those douchebags that collect friends on their Facebook, Twitter or who the fuck cares site. Twenty years ago I would say that you don't need friends when you play games, most games back then were designed for one player and sometimes a second player could join in a splitscreen or you would take turns playing the game. But now with online multiplayer developers want you to play with your friends online, well they're actually counting on you to play with your friends online because some games are only playable (which sometimes means only fun when you play with friends) when you play these games with friends. If you're still a die hard solo gamer, a lone wolf, then you should be ok, eventhough more and more games get multiplayer and the future of games is pointing more and more towards playing with your friends instead of playing alone. So do you need friends? Yes, it's good to have friends and not just for your offline life but now also for your online life. So don't forget about them and put the controller down every now and then to spend some time with friends, at least if you don't spend time with them in games.
