Games are turning into Hollywood?
I´m not talking about how realistic games can look, I´m talking about how so many games get a remake or a sequel. It probably wouldn´t surprise you that a lot of these games aren´t that interesting or it would probably be better if they were left alone. That doesn´t mean it´s all bad, there are definitely some good games out there that deserve to get a polished up version and there´s nothing wrong with that! But when it happens a lot for almost every game that was popular in the past then that means we´re not getting many new games, at least not games worth mentioning.
What´s wrong with a remake?
In a way there´s nothing wrong with that, but at the same time it does feel like it´s doing something bad. For example you could remake the old Star Wars trilogy and make those hack and slash fight scenes look amazing and brush up all special effects while you´re at it but nobody is doing that. Do you know why? Because the fans would go crazy with rage, even if the movies are starting to look old they´re still unique and a milestone in the movie industry and to remake that would feel like an insult to a lot of fans. The same counts for some games, as much as we love them we don´t want to see these games being squeezed out like crazy just so the developers can earn some easy money. I think a lot of gamers want to see new games and experience new adventures, that´s much better than doing the same shit over and over again but then with better graphics.
So sequels are also bad?
Not always, sticking with movies and Star Wars I think it´s safe to say that a lot of fans prefer the sequel to the first Star Wars movie (Empire strikes back). With games that sometimes the same, for example a lot of Resident Evil fans prefer Resident Evil 2 over the first one and with Gears of War a lot of fans prefer Gears of War 3 over the first two. But that´s not always the case, with Silent Hill it´s actually the opposite, after the first three games it just went down hill instead of Silent Hill. I don´t think I even have to mention games like CoD and Battlefield where in each game you pretty much do the same. Sure it´s fun but don´t be surprised if a lot of people can´t see the changes and will hate the games for that. But some people just hate to hate, so I guess that doesn´t say much either.
What does this mean for the future of games?
A lot of remakes and a lot of sequels, it´s pretty much the same as Hollywood films. Which is a shame because there is still so much to do and so much creativity to come up with new things, but that means actually doing something and not repeating the same shit over and over again! Maybe some people are happy with remakes and sequels and sometimes it´s nice, but too much of that and we´re in a neverending spiral of the same crap. As much as I love some games I´d rather play something new every now and then, it´s a gamble but at least it´s better than playing games I already know and don´t hold any surprises. It´s nice to watch the same movie, but when you´ve seen a movie ten times then I can´t help but feel like I´m wasting time. The same counts for games, it´s nice to play a blast from the past but sometimes certain things are just better in the past. Just look at Goldeneye 64, developers have tried to copy that game so many times and failed every time. Sometimes you just need to leave a game alone!
