What is the Prison of Elders in Destiny?
Without a raid in the House of Wolves dlc you can imagine that a lot of eyes will be looking at the Prison of Elders. In this three player challenge mode you will have to do your best to survive, otherwise you will fail! Will this be enough to keep players happy and is this an improvement? I guess for die hard fans of the raids this will be a step back, but I think that the Prison of Elders does offer people that can´t play the raids something new. Hopefully something good...
What is the Prison of Elders?
One of the first things that came to my mind was horde mode in Gears of War, it´s a mode where you survive waves of enemies and sometimes you also have to complete objectives to make it to the next wave. The amount of waves aren´t that many as in horde mode but it´s challenging! You can choose your entry level which is level 28, 32, 34 and 35. So that should keep you busy for some time. But I think a good team will probably clear that without too much trouble. The objectives I saw in the reveal are destroying mines and dismantiling mines (which feels more like a domination capture point), but there are probably more objectives. You also get a reward in the third wave, it´s a rocket launcher with about ten shots that can destroy enemies and one of the three players can pick it up. Another similarity with horde mode is that there is also a boss round, you have to face a boss that is powerful and gets the help of a lot of other enemies. That´s when your teamwork will really be tested and if you can survive!
Is this only accessible to people that have friends in Destiny?
Nope, there is matchmaking so even when you don´t know anyone in Destiny you can still play it with other random players. I think this is a big improvement when I look at the raids that made it almost impossible for people who don´t know other people that play Destiny. The matchmaking makes the Prison of Elders a good place to meet other people and see how well you work together. Of course it´s not going to be all good but hopefully you get some good experiences from it. At least you get a chance to play it as a random player, something I can´t say about raids.
Is the Prison of Elders and improvement compared to the two raids?
I think it is, because first of all it´s accessible to everyone that has the dlc. So no more need to find other people that help you, the game will do that for you. It´s also better because of the different entry levels, so if you´re only level 28 you don´t have to miss out, you can still play. With a raid there is only one entry level, well there is the hard mode version that requires a higher entry level but it´s still quite limited. It also looks like a lot of fun where you can face some tough enemies without going into the extreme with some raid bullshit where one mistake means you have to wipe the team. I´m certain some raid fans will be disappointed but for people who haven´t played the raids or have enough of the raids then the Prison of Elders is a good replacement!
