Looking back at.....Anno 1602!
I first played this game in the late 90´s, which was a lot of fun and I had played other types of strategy games like Age of Empires. But Anno 1602 is more detailed and is more about trading and keeping your colony happy, of course you can also wage war with other colonies or the inhabitants of the Island. Usually you can live peacefully and have a great time with trade, but if you desire war then that´s something you can also get! It´s actually a simple game and easy to learn, but at the same time detailed enough to give people with a love for strategy something to keep them busy.
Start simple.
At the beginning you only have one ship and you have to pick an island to start your colony, this is important because if you pick a bad island (for example too small or not enough resources on that island) then that can cause problems later. Of course you can always expand to other islands but it definately helps if your first island is a good island! You begin with basic needs and make certain that the colonists have enough things to stay alive, later more luxury items will be required to expand and improve your colony. This also requires certain buildings and upgrades for your buildings. Depending on your island you can start trading in different goods and earn money with that, but also use those resources to keep your colonists happy. But you´re not alone, there are also other ships that look for a island to settle their colony and it´s really a race who finds the best island first. It doesn´t guarantee victory but it definitely gives you an advantage!
War or peace?
At first you´ll most likely just want to trade, become rich and invest in your own colony. But there will come a time when you want more or you´ve had enough of one of your rivals, then you can attack them and start a war. These wars don´t have to take long, especially if the colony of your rival is weaker than yours. You can also form an alliance with a rival, then when you´re under attack your ally will help and vice versa. But the most fun I´ve had in this game is with trading, earning so much gold that you feel like Scrooge McDuck. I made a fortune with selling cannonballs, of course I had to be careful to whom I was selling because you don´t want to sell them to someone that could attack you with the cannonballs you just sold him!
Fun!
What´s great about Anno 1602 is that it´s easy to learn and a lot of fun to play. I wasn´t a big strategy player when I first started playing, but this game definitely helped me learn things and improve my skills. What´s also a lot of fun is that this game can keep you busy for a long time, under the right settings you could go on for as long as you want. It doesn´t mean you have to fight, you can decide to you trade and have fun with that. The game can be what you want it to be, which is good because not everyone likes to wage war with others. It´s an older game for your PC but it´s definitely worth checking out if you haven´t done so already.
