The rise of the gamer girl?
I know some people hate the term gamer girl, because they say that everyone that plays games is a gamer and that doesn´t have to be specified as boy or girl gamer. But for the sake of being clear I´m using this term, so deal with it!
So if I have to believe the latest statistics about gaming there are about as many male as female gamers, which means people that still claim that girls don´t play games are lying or just stupid! But why is it that you still don´t see that many women playing in online multiplayer? I think a lot of women don´t always play with their mic plugged in, so that makes it a bit more difficult to realize that you´re playing with or against a girl. Then there are also women that use a male gamertag with a male avatar (Xboxlive) to hide from annoying people that would harass them. Why? Well some guys are so pathetic that they can´t handle a defeat or just have a need to be a loser to harass girls online, because that clearly states that you´re a mature gamer!
Women play more secretly? Well not all of them of course! Some just don´t enjoy the same type of games that a lot of guys do, for example online competitive multiplayer isn´t always the nicest place to hang around and it wouldn´t surprise me that some women (and men as well) just prefer to play cooperative games or single player games. Especially women that are in a relationship like to play together with their partner and I don´t blame them, it´s nice to share something you like with someone you love! But then there are also women that like to play handheld games or those (silly) games you can play on your phone, these type of games are often not recognized as real games by some people (mostly guys) and thus they claim that these women aren´t ´real´ gamers. Which is a load of bullshit of course! Their argument why those aren´t real games often point towards the game not having a story, well you´d be surprised with the amount of games on consoles that have no story in them and yet still count as games. When I´m looking at the CoD games then I see a lot of people don´t even play the single player, which means a story is apparently not that important! Games are meant to be fun, so I´d say that usually makes a game what it!
The statistics did show that women prefer to play pc games, so you might be out of luck to meet a lot of female gamers in console games. I´m not saying it´s impossible but the chances are higher if you play pc games, at least if you want to play with or against women. I do know that there are some guys out there that don´t like that, but you´ll have to deal with the fact that women play games and a lot more than you might think. But can you blame them? I mean games are fun and why shouldn´t women enjoy that as much as men? I just hope that one that this isn´t considered as weird or a surprise and people just accept the fact that women like to play games and are often just as good (or even better) than men.
