Free games on Xboxlive?
That probably got your attention huh? Well before you celebrate I think I should tell you that this doesn´t mean you get free games just like that. First of all you need to have a gold account, so without that there is nothing in it for you unfortunately. Not every game is for free, certain arcade titles are chosen for this promotion. But this promotion only lasts for 24 hours! What happens after that is unclear, but I assume that you´ll have to pay for the full game if you want to keep playing it. Of course the die hard gamers can probably finish a lot of games in a day so maybe you don´t even need to buy the game anymore!
Is this a counter move from Microsoft against Sony? You would think that it is, with Sony claiming that people will never have to pay money to play online and offer free games every now and then. So it´s good that Microsoft is also doing something positive, because giving people a chance to try a game without actually having to pay for it or just playing a short trial isn´t really helping to sell certain games. If you get the full game unlocked for 24 hours then there is a good chance you can try out the game and decide if it´s worth buying or not. This is something that isn´t always clear in the trial, because that usually focuses on a part of the game, it´s often a select part of the game that is fun or just cool. Of course some games just start from the beginning but there are several games that try to skip the boring parts in the trial and just offer you the fun and excitement.
Do you think this will be a good thing for players on Xboxlive? That´s a bit of a silly question, of course free games are good and even if it´s just for 24 hours you can still figure out if you like the game or not. I think this is what Microsoft wanted at first, but I guess their way of explaining it and everything attached to that gave such a negative impact to the gaming community that before launch they changed this. But I guess the part where you couldn´t play games from other people and that your disc would be worthless after you register the game to your account made people a bit upset (with good reason). The part of free games just didn´t make it through, but it seems that has found its way back now!
What does this mean for the future? I´d say more free games and a better chance for gamers to find fun games they really want to buy and not something they regret buying. Because it really sucks when you spend your money on games you don´t really enjoy playing, so hopefully this will help you prevent that from happening! So keep an eye on Xboxlive for free games, with some luck you´ll be able to play some games for free (for 24 hours).
