Sinful Sunday: Looking for trouble
I like to believe that most gamers play games for fun, I´m one of those people and when I play games I want to have fun. Unfortunately there are also people online that play games for other reasons, often to annoy others in whatever way possible. It´s true that this is fun for them, but if that fun comes at the expense of others then that´s not the type of fun I´d appreciate!
But who are these people? To figure that out I´ll first take a look at some personal experience on this subject, because I think we´ve all been a scumbag in a game at some point. When I play games with others then I do my best to win, at least if it´s a competitive game. If it´s a cooperative game then I´d still prefer to be the guy with the highest score, not to have bragging rights or anything but just because I like to win. When people annoy me in some way, which could be people that deliberately try to annoy you or people that use cheap tricks to succeed, then the nice part of the match is gone for me. When people play dirty I´ll play dirty, when people talk shit to me I´ll talk shit to them. I guess in a way I´m not looking for trouble but when I find it I´ll be just as bad as they are. Which makes me wonder if other people are just like that, because people that just play games to annoy others are in a small group and don´t get much support for these actions. So in a way a lot of people that annoy others are often victims themselves, but then turn into annoying people themselves.
How do you deal with these people? If you don´t want to get sucked into this retarded spiral of stupid behaviour I would suggest that you mute people you don´t know, block people that feel the need to send stupid messages to you and don´t fall for any bullshit they throw at you. People that camp are hoping desperately that you keep going to them and get yourself killed again, so don´t be a fool to fall for that! Anger is your enemy, so if you feel like you´re annoyed then you might want to back down. Which means leaving the game, preferbly when the match is over because rage quitting isn´t really something I would promote. Take a break and do something that you do enjoy, then you can always try again later.
But what about your friends, is it ok to look for trouble then? Well that´s up to you, if it´s just your friends and you know them pretty good then you know what you can and what you can´t do. Unless you enjoy seeing them angry, then by all means do whatever you like but be ready to deal with the consequences! Of course there can be a friendly rivalry and I think they´d feel more insulted if you didn´t do whatever it would take to beat them than just trying to be nice. But you probably know your friends better than me, so you know how to handle that. Just try to remember that it´s just a game and not something worth ruining a friendship over. So if things get a bit too heated then you might want to do something else!
