Heroes that don´t get the game they deserve
It seems easy, making a super hero game. But in reality this isn´t true, not many developers have managed to make something memorable and when you look at the amount of super hero games then that´s not a good thing! But why is it so difficult?
Some heroes have powers that make them almost impossible as a character in a game, unless it´s a weaker version of the hero or all the villains get an upgrade so they´re a match for the hero. I think Superman is one of those heroes that is close to impossible, because he is so powerful that your ordinary thug can´t stand a chance against him but to flood the world with evil Kryptonians just seems weird. Also ideas for rogue Superman clones is something people don´t want to see. Which means you either fly around over the world as an overpowered character that can´t be beaten which is boring or you face the risk of being beaten by a simple street thug because he knocks you out if you take enough damage. You can see how this makes it difficult to make a good game with Superman in it. Eventhough Lego did manage that in Lego Batman 2, they weakened him down for a time in the game but it didn´t feel terrible. Actually the humour and easy gameplay made it fun to have these characters in the game, I guess it doesn´t have to be complicated!
What about less known or more shady heroes? I think a popular vigilante is Red Hood, but he´s hardly ever been put in games and if he has then it´s usually his costume for another character that is in the game. Which sucks, because I think you could make a cool vigilante game with Red Hood. But there is good news, I heard that there will be a story arc with the Red Hood in Batman Arkham Knight (but only if you pre-order the game). So once again there is hope for some characters, because with super heroes becoming more popular there is a better chance to see more games with heroes and villains in it. Of course the popular heroes like Batman, Spiderman and Wolverine will most likely dominate in the hero game genre but I think there is always room for something new. Because not every popular hero game is a good game, I think Batman games weren´t always that good before the Arkham series and Spiderman has also had some bad games. But the better the hero games sell the bigger the chance becomes that you can actually see more heroes in games!
Maybe modern technology and the latest updates in the game industry make it possible to add more heroes and villains in games, hopefully giving you a fantastic game that is actually worth buying. It´s always a gamble when you see a new game, but certain developers have proven themselves and that does give you more confidence in the games they make. That doesn´t mean that games from less known developers are bad, but it usually does give you some confidence if you´re familiar with their previous games and get an idea what to expect in the game. My favourite hero game is Batman Arkham City, I´ve had a lot of fun in that game and the dlc is also pretty good! But I wouldn´t mind seeing other heroes or villains getting their own game, as long as it´s done right I´m interested!
