Looking back at.....Ninja Gaiden (Xbox)

You might have heard about this game, even if you haven´t played it then you´re probably familiar with the love or hate people have for this game. The love usually comes from the challenge this game will give you and the hate? Well that´s actually the same thing, the challenge is just too much for some people. It wasn´t an easy ride for me and it will take a lot of tries to actually make it through as a button bashing moron, which is usually my way of playing hack and slash games. Well Ninja Gaiden isn´t that type of game and just pressing buttons will most likely get you killed!

I first played Dead or Alive 2 before I played Ninja Gaiden, so I was familiar with some of the characters. I also played one of the older NES games, but that´s so long ago that I could barely remember anything from that game. I do remember that these games aren´t easy, so I thought I was well prepared when I first played it. Well I was wrong, I wasn´t ready for this game and after a couple of days I stopped playing. I think it took almost a year before I picked it up again, surprisingly I did make it further but I was running on fumes as I had only a bit of health and no items to help me. The game can be brutal like that, even when you make progress there is enough crap in the game that can mess you up in just a moment. Even random encounters with minions can be dangerous, at least if you don´t know what you´re doing. But the cutscenes with Rachel usually motivated me to keep going, there´s just something about an attractive woman in a black shiny outfit that wants you to make it further in a game!

This game is only for expert gamers? You could say that, but I´m not an expert and I made it. So maybe with a lot of practice, patience and luck you can actually make it as well. I usually want to rush through games but this game is a good example where this isn´t a good idea, some enemies are so much easier to defeat when you play more defensive instead of agressive. I wasn´t even surprised to see that a lot of people that bought Ninja Gaiden returned the game within a week to the shop where they bought it, after some time people that wanted to buy the game got a warning from the owner that it´s a difficult game and you might first want to rent it to see if you like it. Of course a lot of people didn´t listen and ended up coming back the next day with shame in their eyes.

Why should you play this game? Well it´s fun, once you learn how to play it correctly. It´s a nice challenge, especially when you´re used to some easy games. The gameplay is pretty good and the graphics were also nice for that time, well even now the cutscenes look good. The story is ok and it does motivate you to keep going at it to see what´s going on. The game isn´t impossible, but it will take a bit more than your average skill to beat this game. At least more than you´re probably used to.
