A woman in the leading role?
It might seem crazy to some but we do live in the 21th century so I think it´s not that weird that women are finally getting bigger roles in movies and also in games. Sometimes women take over the role of a man, what I mean with that is that some women play the part that a man used to play. Which in real life can be the person that provides for the family, but in a movie, comic or game it can be taking over a name or power. As you might have heard already, the new Thor is a woman and is a good example of this.
The new Thor is a woman? Yes a woman, no the original Thor didn´t get a sex change and no this isn´t an alternate dimension version, this is a woman that wields Thor´s hammer (Mjölnir) and is named Thor. How this all works, since Thor is a name and not a title which is by the way a male name, I don´t know. But it´s not the first time that this happened, I think some of you probably know Captain Marvel and how Ms Marvel became the new Captain Marvel. The difference with this is that Captain Marvel is more of a title instead of a name, at least captain is a rank in the military so this is definately not gender related.
How does this work in games? Well sometimes women take over where the men left the story, for example in Silent Hill 3 you continue the story with Heather that you started in Silent Hill with Harry. I actually like how the daughter takes over from the father, it feels natural and not something that is forced. Of course there are also a lot of games that allow you to choose your character, for example in Resident Evil you can choose if you want to play as Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. Both characters have their own speciality and eventhough Chris can take more damage it´s often Jill that is more popular because she can carry more items and can open locked doors with her lockpick.
So women are taking over? Who knows, I don´t think that this will happen but women are clearly going to play a bigger role in movies and games, they´re not the damsel in distress anymore because now they would rather kick ass themselves! Which is something I strongly encourage. I just hope that women aren´t turning into playthings for teenage guys, but actually get the roles they deserve and play some awesome roles in games and movies!
