Competitive games make you agressive?
It seems like a simple question but for me it usually raises more questions, probably because I have a yes and a no answer. A lot of competitive games will put you up against other players and that might put a hostile vibe in the match, because even when you´re friends in real life in this match you´re enemies and you have to beat the other to win. It seems serious but it´s not, unfortunately some people take it a bit too far.
There is no friendship in competitive games? That´s not true, because there are friends that play competitive games and even when there is hostility then this is only for a certain amount of time. The more focused you are on winning then you want to avoid losing at all costs! Which might make you less friendly and thus more hostile towards others, maybe even your friends. But this is just during the match, people that do bring this hostility with them after a match aren´t really good friends. So eventhough you´re expected to beat others, there is nothing that says that you can´t be friends with the people you face. It might even be an interesting match to play against your friends instead of with them in a cooperative game.
Competitive vs cooperative, which is better? This is something that is based on preference, one isn´t better than the other. But it´s true that in cooperative games there is usually less agression, because you´re supposed to work together and under normal circumstances that shouldn´t make people angry. When you choose to play a cooperative game, then you choose to play with others and work together as a team. In competitive games you can sometimes be a member of a team but that doesn´t mean that you want to work together as a team. Don´t be suprised if you encounter a lot of lone wolves in competitive games, so as a team player you´re probably better off in cooperative games. Not that it´s forbidden to play as a team in competitive games, but I wouldn´t expect everyone to play as a member of a team and hostility is more frequent.
So competitive games make you agressive? I think they have a bigger chance to make you agressive, but it would also depend on you. Are you someone that gets angry quickly? Can you work well with others? How do you handle defeat? In competitive games there is a bigger chance to fail, especially in deathmatch where it´s every man (or woman) for himself (or herself). I think if you play just for fun and you don´t really care if you win or lose that competitive games don´t make you angry, which means that there is no agression. But if you can´t handle defeat, you get angry quickly and you face people that annoy you then you´re in for a rough time. Maybe you should ask yourself if it´s a smart idea to play competitive games, because if they make you angry that much then maybe it´s better to play something else!
