It doesn´t matter who you are in a game?
After reading a lot of negative and sometimes hateful comments about the new Captain America being black it made me wonder if it´s the same in games, when they take a familiar character and give him or her a new look. The good thing about some games is that you can customize your own character, which means that you decide how he or she will look. I think the Mass Effect trilogy is a good example of that, because you can create your own version of Commander Shepard, then he or she will be shown like that in every cutscene and in every dialogue. But is it always that simple?
Attachment leads to the dark side? If you believe Yoda and you´re into Star Wars then that might be true, but I don´t think that there is anything wrong with a little bit of attachment. For example I like Link the way he looks in the ocarina of time and twilight princess, the mature and still cool looking guy in green. I know that they changed his look a bit in the wind waker and I was actually upset about that at first, but when I played the game I actually learned to appreciate this new look. Ok I still prefer the ocarina of time look but that doesn´t mean that I can´t accept something new or different. I´m pretty certain I´m not the only one, because sometimes it just take some time to get used to someone or something new.
But what if the change is too much? Well that would depend on how attached you are to the character, because if you really like the way he or she looks then it sucks when someone else changes that. Unfortunately there isn´t much you can do about that, sure you can rage online and try to rally up more people that don´t like this change but usually that won´t change a thing. I find the new Captain America actually a good choice, the old one can´t be Captain America anymore because he lost his powers and is now just an old man. So he asks one of his best friends to take over, this makes perfect sense to me! When it comes to the new Thor I´m a bit more reluctant to accept this, no I don´t hate her! It´s just weird that they make Thor a title that can be passed on while it´s a (male) name, so that´s why I find that a bit weird. In games I heard a lot of people hate the look of Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 5, it´s true he does look like he´s more muscles than brains in that game but it never made me want to hate on the game. To be honest I didn´t even notice that at first because I was happy to see Wesker return. Then there is blonde Jill in Resident Evil 5, this also got a lot of hate but if you read the files that you can find in the game then you know why she has blonde hair. Besides that´s not something I consider as a big change anyway, people dye their hair a lot and it´s nothing new.
So does it matter who you are in a game? To be honest I think it does, because if you look at how much time some people spend on creating a character then it´s quite clear that they value the look of their character. If I had more skill with that and patience for it then I´d probably do that as well but I can´t say that I spend hours on that, well maybe in the Sims I can spend a bit more time on that but really brown hair and brown eyes is usually enough for me to say that this sim looks like me. But if you take a closer look to the character you play in a game, man or woman and hero or villain, then I don´t think it really matter that much. Because people like to play both as men and as women, people also like being the hero and being the villain. Of course not every character fits in every game and it would be foolish to say that people will accept anything in a game. If there is hate or complaints then this is usually just a phase. This counts for comics, games and movies. Some people will carry this hate with them for a long time but most people just have to get used to the news, I mean do you hear people still complaining about Nick Fury being black? No, because most people have gotten used to that!
