Destiny isn´t your typical mmorpg?
Often when I think of a typical mmorpg I look at World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2, eventhough Guild Wars 2 is free to play which isn´t that typical. But consoles aren´t that lucky with having a succesful mmorpg, sure Defiance is doing pretty good (thanks to the popular tv show) but that´s one of many that is doing well. So what chance does Destiny have?
The latest news I heard about Destiny is that it´s not going to be just one game with a lot of expansions, instead they´re going to make Destiny 2 and 3 as well. You can visit these games with your character(s) from the first Destiny game, this allows you to have a type of Shepard character that makes his or her way through the story. But unlike Shepard your character in Destiny doesn´t speak, which means you have a mute character that just follows orders. I´m actually quite upset about this because I thought we´re at a point where we can have talking playable characters in a mmorpg, just look at Star Wars the Old Republic!
So why is everyone so hyped about this game? Maybe because it looks good or that it´s made by Bungie and a lot of people have good memories of Bungie making Halo games. Eventhough Destiny has some Halo influences it´s not the same and thus people might have an unpleasant surprise when they will play Destiny. I bet that the negative comments will be massive in the first week after the launch of the game, people have already played it but it´s still a work in progress. So people that see things they don´t like think it can still be fixed and that is quite possible, but I doubt that any big issues will be changed in such a short time.
I´m actually quite interested in this game but I´m not hyped about it, I´d love to give it a try but it´s not really my game of the year. I say this without being negative about the game, because it looks good and it can actually be fun to play it. I´m just not really into the mmorpg genre, so that would also explain a lot. I wouldn´t mind seeing Destiny as a succes, I just hope that they´ll make Destiny 2 an improved version and not just a game to continue what they have in the first one.
So is this game a typical mmorpg? Yes and no, there are things in Destiny that I consider as typical but there is also enough in the game that makes it quite different. I´m curious how well the game will be received and how much fun you can have with this game, a typical mmorpg should provide you with many hours of fun but unfortunately not every mmorpg can deliver that! Let´s hope that Destiny can make it worth spending your time on.
