Sinful Sunday: lying in games
In this new topic I´ll handle every Sunday one of my sins or sins that I´ve seen in games, things that aren´t really horrible but still might not be the nicest thing to do. There isn´t really a religious input here, just a play with words and in a way trying to make the gaming world a little bit better. Nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes and we all do things that aren´t really acceptable. Let´s dive deeper in some of these situations or actions that are connected to gaming.
Lying isn´t a big deal, right? It´s true, it´s not a big deal to lie to others but you might feel uncomfortable living with that lie. But it will really depend on the lie itself, I mean did you just say that you have blue eyes instead of brown eyes or did you actually lie about your age? Also why did you lie? I know that some people lie online to achieve certain goals, some of these goals are quite disturbing and quite unpleasant. But I don´t think everyone that lies online is a monster, we all have moments in our lives where we lie. But what does that mean when you play games? Is it ok to lie in games?
When you play with others you can work with an honor system, you make an agreement that you don´t use a certain type of weapon or you don´t go to certain parts of the map. But how many times to people actually hold themselves to these agreements? I´d say if you play with friends then it might be acceptible but with strangers you might not be so forgiving when they break the agreement. Sometimes a lie can actually save you and if you play it smart you can actually use it to get a kill on someone else in some games. For example in Saints Row multiplayer I had a moment where I just picked up a shotgun but I hadn´t equipped it yet, then out of nowhere a guy shows up and was about to shoot me. I asked him to spare me because I had just spawned and I didn´t have any weapons, suprisingly this guy actually did spare me and turned around. This was a chance for me to shoot him and so I got the shotgun and shot him in the back, of course that was a low blow and not something I would normally do. Still at that moment it seemed like a good idea, you see a lie isn´t always something you work on for hours to perfect. Sometimes a lie is something spontaneous, it´s in the heat of the moment that you sometimes say or do things you normally wouldn´t do. What I said and did wasn´t very nice, but I guess in a way the guy learned a lesson from that and I got another kill in the game. So in a way you can say we both got something out of that, but still it´s something that I´ve remembered as that was a dirty trick, something I´m not proud of but if I´d have to do it all over again then I guess I´d do the same thing.
Unfortunately there are also plenty of people with less innocent lies, they pretend to be someone they´re not and that´s not always without danger. So always be weary of people that you meet online. Not everyone is who he or she says he or she is, but I´d say most of you probably know that already. I don´t think you´ll meet a lot of these people on consoles, as you can often hear if someone isn´t who he or she says he or she is, because a guy that pretends to be a girl will have difficulties sounding like one and an older guy probably doesn´t sound like a teenager. I could be wrong, maybe some people are creative and they can fool you. Just remember to be careful and not too quick with trusting someone. Not every liar is a monster, but monsters are often liars!
