Cutscenes, do we really need them?

Some of us love them but others really hate them, cutscenes are in a lot of games and they can be a lot of fun to watch or extremely boring and annoying. Some games go without cutscenes while others have a lot and some of them are also pretty long. Cutscenes are sometimes unwanted and other times needed, I guess it really depends on the person playing the game. But why are there cutscenes in games?

A lot of cutscenes are in a game to help tell the story, but other times it´s just showing off how beautiful the game is. I remember that the opening cinematic in Final Fantasy VIII made me want to finish that game, it´s just so good! The cutscenes in that game often introduced characters or showed something that looked so much better in a cutscene. But in games like Max Payne 3 a cutscene was also used as you having something to look at while the next chapter is being loaded. Which is actually pretty smart, unless you´ve finished the game for several times and you just want to skip that.

What makes cutscenes annoying? I think on number one I would say that the cutscenes you can´t skip are the most annoying ones, no matter how pretty they are you don´t want to see the same shit dozens of times because you´re stuck in a part of the game and you keep seeing the same cutscene just before you die in the game. As a rager I can tell you that this is something that makes you quite unhappy, to say the least! But also for people that go for a speedrun (which means trying to finish the game as fast as possible) a cutscene can be something annoying, they just want to beat the game as fast as they can and don´t want to be bothered with all the cutscenes. Other things that can be annoying is bad voice acting or just a stupid story, but then I really wonder what keeps you in the game.

So cutscenes, do we really need them? If I have to be honest then I say that we don´t need them, but in some games it´s nice to have them. When I play a rpg I like cutscenes, they help develop the story and it´s nice to look at a beautiful cutscene. Final Fantasy games are known for having these beautiful cutscenes but when I look at the recent Final Fantasy games then I can´t say that I´m that happy with them. Sure the cutscenes are beautiful but the story is just not something I like. I miss the Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X days. Another game series that has some nice cutscenes are the Metal Gear Solid games, but especially in Metal Gear Solid IV you have a lot of them and sometimes they seem to be endless. It´s the type of game I want to finish once, because going through that twice is just too much. So when you put cutscenes in a game try not to make them too long and definately don´t throw gamers to death with them, some might like it but I think most people don´t like that. I mean if you want to make a movie then make a movie, but let a game be a game!
