Graphics or gameplay?
A lot of times I hear gamers talk about the new generation of consoles introduces themselves with better graphics in games, but so far I´ve heard several people complain that the graphics aren´t that much better. But is this really so imporant? How about gameplay? Do you consider gameplay to be a deciding factor in buying a game or passing it? But no matter how nice the controls are in a game if it looks like shit then you´ll probably want to ignore it anyway. Or are there other things that decide what makes you want to buy a game or not?
In my NES and SNES days I couldn´t care less about graphics, I mean in the 8 bit and 16 bit days everything looked kind of the same so nobody really cared about that. The gameplay did matter, did you have good control over your character or some retarded bullshit that made you want to jump in the hole. But the better the games started to look on future consoles the more important that became, suddenly it wasn´t about the gameplay but it was about the graphics. Even the select group that cared the most about the story seemed to be affected by this as the graphics group seemed to grow more and more. But I´m not saying that someone that cares about graphics doens´t care about gameplay, I´m saying that people that care the most about graphics often forget that this isn´t really the most important part of a game. Sure it´s nice if a game looks good but don´t you want the game to play good as well? I think I´ve played several games with a terrible camera control, no matter how pretty a game looks it´s shit like that which ruins a game.
So graphics aren´t important? Of course it´s nice if a game looks good, I would be lying if I said that I don´t care about graphics. I just don´t consider that as the most important thing about a new game or future generations of consoles. Maybe some of the Xbox One and Playstation 4 games look quite similar as the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 games, but that will change sooner or later. I care much more about the gameplay, how do the new controllers feel in your hand and how are the buttons placed on the controller? Also how well does the character in the game respond to your actions on the controller? Graphics is something people can often fix, just look at a HD release for some older games (which doesn´t always actually make them look better by the way) and you know that they can fix that over time. But bad controls will often stay bad, this is something that time often can´t fix for a certain game. Appreciate a game for good gameplay and see good graphics as a bonus, at least that´s how I see it!
