Looking back at.....Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic!

Who could´ve thought that a Star Wars game is that good? Oh sure you have your Rogue Squadron fans and then you have maybe some Shadows of the Empire fans, but really was there ever such a great adventure as in Knights of the Old Republic (Kotor)? I don´t think so! Instead of messing with the whole Skywalker saga you play in a time way before all that happened, about 3000 years before. Strangely enough technology didn´t really make that much advancements because a lot of things I saw there were also there in the movies, I think certain things in the game even looked more modern than in the original trilogy. But who really cares about that? The game is fantastic!

What makes this game so good? In one simple word I´d say the story, because that was a lot of fun to play and then play again. But also the characters are quite memorable, my favourite HK-47 is by far one of the funniest characters I´ve seen in all the games I´ve played. This is coming from a guy that isn´t really into robots and things like that, but somehow I couldn´t help but have this robot a lot of times in my party. Often along with my favourite female companion, Bastila. I think Bastila is a lot of fun to have with you because it´s just hilarious to tease her, how she constantly tries to be the wise jedi and how you break her concentration every time with your jokes and sarcasm. If you know what to say at the right times then you can even start a romance with her, but let´s not forget that this was at the early stages of romances with companions so don´t expect any Mass Effect love making scenes. Even your kiss with Bastila is hidden behind a black screen, which is a shame but the dialogue makes up for that. Later in the game *spoiler* you become a jedi yourself and together with Bastila and the rest of your party you travel to other worlds to find the star forge that is supposedly to be a dangerous weapon. A sith lord called Darth Malak is searching for the star forge as well, which means you´ll encounter his goons and eventually himself as well. The adventures, the humour, the characters and the story make this an unforgettable adventure for me!

Of course the graphics look like crap compared to games you see now, but for that time you had a very nice game that is still quite playable in my opinion. It was thanks to Knights of the Old Republic that I noticed Bioware, who would later make games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I was a bit disappointed in the sequel but it wasn´t that bad, still it didn´t give me what I would like to play. I still hope that one day they´ll make Knights of the Old Republic part 3 and that this will continue where the first game ended. I´m quite certain I´m not the only one who wants that. Star Wars the Old Republic is a mmorpg, which isn´t that bad and certainly has it´s moments but it still doesn´t give the fans of the first game what they want. Sure they´ll sometimes mention the main character(s) from the first game but that´s about as close as it gets. So hopefully one day in the future there will be the sequel that all the Knights of the Old Republic fans have been waiting for. Just like the Bond movie, never say never (again)!
