When hard mode isn´t hard enough
Have you ever tried playing a game on the highest difficulty? It´s probably not something you do from the start, well maybe some people would but I think it´s safe to say that most gamers prefer to take it easy in their first playthrough. I don´t think that there are many people out there that actually enjoy making a game more difficult for themselves, because more difficulty sometimes means less fun and more frustration. So why should you even bother playing it on professional, veteran, legendary or nightmare mode?
As a kid I never enjoyed playing games on hard mode, so I didn´t even bother with very hard mode (that´s how they used to call it). I guess it had something to do with not believing in my skills, I never thought I could pull it off and so I didn´t even want to try it. In the early Nintendo and Sony days there was no such thing as an achievement or trophy, so there wasn´t really a motivation to play on that mode. Some games would offer some nice rewards as a powerful weapon, a cool outfit or some cheats you could use in the game. But why would you play again through the game if you just beat it on the highest difficulty? I mean you get the cool stuff but after going through all that I can´t imagine you would want to go through it again but then with your cool extra reward. Especially games that aren´t fun to play again aren´t the type of games you would want to go through again just to check your reward. I do like that some games offer rewards now that you get in multiplayer, for example in Halo 4 you get the Mark VI armor once you complete the game on legendary. But developers are crafty, they know that a lot of people like to collect achievements/trophies and thus they put achievements/trophies in a game to beat the game on the highest difficulty. This is probably now one of the main motivations for people to try and beat the game on this difficulty, which is sometimes an impossible task for some gamers. But it has shown me that I´m capable of more then I first thought, for example beating Halo and Resident Evil games on the highest difficulty is a personal victory for me. I probably wouldn´t have tried that if there wasn´t an achievement tied to that, so maybe it´s not so bad to sometimes be tempted to try something new.
How do you beat a game on the highest difficulty? I wish I could say that all it takes is a lot of practice, but then I would be lying. It takes patience, skill and determination. If you lack one of these qualities then no amount of practice will get you through the challenges that will await you. Maybe you get lucky, I mean without luck none of us would probably make it as far as we have so far, but there are often moments in a game where you´ll be tested in one of the three qualities I mentioned. Can you face the same shit 30 times over and over again? Can you pull of a quick accurate shot? Can you slow down your pace without getting horribly annoyed and bored? I know that I´ve given up on some games, just because I was done with it. It´s not the end of the world, I guess sometimes games are just out of your league. But that doesn´t make you a bad gamer, never think that! We all have our own speciality and sometimes that´s not enough to beat what you want to beat, but I´m certain there are games out there that you can beat and even on the highest difficulty. But never forget to have fun, that is the most important part of gaming!
