Midnight launch

I think people in Australia and New Zealand are already having their midnight launch but here we have to wait a little bit longer on Call of Duty Ghosts. It always suprises me that so many people go to such an event, it´s nice if you get something extra but as far as I can see it you only get to play the game a bit earlier than some other people. It´s not even unique because multiple countries have a midnight launch and there are a lot of people there, so it´s not that if you get your game there that you´re the first to play it. Of course compared to most people that want to play the game you´ll be one of the first, but is that really so important?

In my Playstation years I had this friendly rivalry with other players, we usually bought the same type of games and it was often a race who played it first and who would beat the game first. I know that´s silly but we we´re teenagers and at that age you do stupid things. My main motivation was that I wanted to beat the game before my friends so they wouldn´t spoil the story for me, because sometimes you meet people who can´t keep their mouth shut when it comes to spoilers. But it´s also nice to be able to talk about things, I mean if you haven´t gotten far in the game then you can´t talk with others how you enjoyed that boss fight or how awesome that chase was.

Things are a lot different now and yet some things stay the same. Now most of us play online with others, I´d say half of the people that play games like Battlefield 4 and CoD Ghosts play it for multiplayer. This means that the earlier you get in the game, the better headstart you get on other players, not that it matters that much because you still need skill to beat others. That fancy higher level gun won´t save you when you can´t get any kills with it. Still I wouldn´t want to rush through any game, unless I´m being forced because of another game release. Something I´m experiencing now with CoD Ghosts, because now I have to rush through Assassin´s Creed IV and I´m not that happy about it. Of course I can take it easy and play CoD Ghosts later this week, but just like the midnight launch people I want to play the game the moment I get it.

Still I can´t help but wonder why people prefer to get their game at a midnight launch instead of getting it by mail, because that´s so much easier! I pre-order most of my games, especially the ones I really want to play. I get them on the day of release and I play the game in the afternoon, so that means people who got it at midnight have a 12 hours (if they played non stop) headstart on me. I wonder if it´s really worth it, the crowd that pushes you and the rushing to get to a game first. It seems quite annoying and to be honest not worth the effort of getting a little bit of a headstart on people who get it later that same day. I heard a story of a friend where during the GTA V midnight launch a man and a woman both wanted the last copy of the game in the store, the woman got it first but the man hit her and took it from her. Another man then hit the guy that took the game from the woman and he took the game for himself. Ah yes, humanity at its best! It´s your own choice if you want to get the game at a midnight launch, pre-order it or buy it in the store whenever you want to. I know what works best for me, I hope you know what works best for you!
