Nemesis

No I´m not talking about the goddess of vengeance and no I´m not talking about the creature in Resident Evil 3 (I´ll leave that poor thing from the second Resident Evil movie out of it). I´m talking about someone that is a constant thorn in you side when you play games, the type of person that always seems to be there to ruin your fun or end your killstreak. Someone can that can turn a fun match for you into a bad match, someone that you might hate with all your heart. But it could also be a rival that you respect and that actually poses a big challenge for you to beat. I´m talking about that type of nemesis.

In a lot of competitive multiplayer matches you´ll encounter someone that could be considered as you nemesis, who constantly seems to be there to shoot you in the back or waiting in ambush to take you down. But maybe this is someone that is just a little bit faster with his or her reflexes? Who really knows, most of the time you don´t know random people that join a match and if you make no effort to get to know them then it´s probably going to stay that way. I´m not saying you should become best of friends with someone that constantly kills you in a game, but maybe you can learn from him or her. To see what you´re doing wrong and how you can counter that. We can all just run and gun over the battlefield, but that usually gets you killed quickly. The same counts for a fighting game, if someone keeps beating you then maybe you need a different tactic. Which might even lead to using another character. It´s always a good thing to have a back up plan, never stick with one trick because sooner or later it won´t work anymore. As stupid as you might think some people are, nobody falls for the same shit all the time. Ok some people might run up to a camper ten times but sooner or later they´re going to learn. But rage isn´t always the best advisor, so don´t be suprised if people keep making the same mistakes. I´m just saying that you shouldn´t expect it, because most people will try other things to get to you.

Some games actually encourage the whole nemesis thing, for example Team Fortress 2 has the nemesis text pop up whenever you get killed five times by the same person without you killing him or her. Of course you can do the same to other people, this is something you´ll also see. It kind of fuels your desire to get revenge, I call this: the instant need, to see him bleed! It´s not fun when someone beats you, but when that person is dominating you then that´s just insult to injury. Of course you want to get even and when the game is pointing out that this person is your nemesis then why would you not want to get revenge?

The most important part about all this is that you leave all this in the game, don´t bring feelings of vengeance with you when you step away from your console or computer. Sure you might still be pissed off but it won´t change anything by getting mad at other people. Just try to get him or her the next time you encounter him or her. As much as you might hate to hear this, but there is always someone better than you out there. So playing a game is expecting to lose sooner or later. Of course you don´t want to think about that and just play games. Which makes perfect sense. Just keep in mind that you might encounter people that will put your skills to the test, you might come out of that as the victor but you might also be beaten. As long as you´re having fun it´s a win for you!
