Determination is a virtue for gamers

Some months ago I talked about prejudice being a sin for gamers, but it´s not all bad out there! As there are sins there are also virtues, I think that determination is one of them. Have you ever been stuck in a level and had to try a lot of times to get past that point? Have you ever faced a difficult boss that just didn´t want to die? Have you ever struggled getting an achievement/trophy? Then you might have some determination, at least if you kept trying until you succeeded!

Why keep pushing when it´s so much easier to give up? Maybe some people actually think that it´s easier to give up than to keep trying. But you can always give up in the end, but up to that point you can keep trying until you succeed. I think we all have our own motivation to keep trying, it´s not always a noble motivation but whatever works for you should suffice to get to the job done. For me it´s pride, this need to beat a game or get that achievement because I´d feel stupid if I couldn´t. I´m not saying that this will guarantee succes, but at least it´s pushed me through some difficult moments in games. I remember in the legend of Zelda: Majora´s mask that you constantly had to rush yourself because you only had three days (not real days but in game days) to complete dungeons and solve puzzles. Which would sometimes lead to some stressful situations, because you don´t want to be in the middle of a dungeon when the moon is about to hit the world! If you walk away from the first sign of trouble, then how do you ever think to succeed? I´m not even talking about just gaming here, sometimes in life you need to keep pushing and be determined. Life isn´t always going to be nice to you, there will come a time and a place where you´ll have to show what you´re worth!

If you find it difficult to keep going, probably out of fear that you´ll go crazy, then taking a break every now and then is a smart idea. I wouldn´t want you to keep pushing until you lose your mind and trust me there are games that can do that to you if you´re not careful! Having a little bit of faith in your skills will definately help as well, but if for some reason you don´t think you can do it then perhaps it´s smarter to back out. Ramming your head a hundred times against the wall might make it crack but your head is by then already broken beyond repair, so blind determination isn´t what you´re looking for. When I talk about determination then it´s that feeling inside that motivates you, which hopefully brings out the best of you. It´s not always easy to find determination, especially when you´re in a negative mood. But rage quitting won´t help either, because the moment you run away from your problems then it will forever be a stain on your determination. A reminder that you ran the moment things didn´t go the way you wanted it to go.

I´m not saying that if you´re determined that you´ll succeed in the end, sometimes even the most determined people can still fail in the end. But at least you tried, you can look back and say to yourself that you did your best and it just wasn´t enough. Of course that sucks, but knowing that you did you best kind of makes it a little better for me. Because I know my limits, I know what I can and what I can´t do. But that doesn´t mean that I run away the moment things look beyond what I can do, games can be difficult but to run away from a challenge is just not in my nature. So pick up your controller and beat that game or get that achievement/trophy!
