Why do you play games?
It seems like a simple question, why do you play games? But there are different reasons to play games, even more than one for some people. Maybe some people don´t even need a reason, they just do things. Ok that´s something out the movie the dark knight. But seriously why do you play games? Is it for fun? Is it for fame? Is it because of your friends? Is it because of work or money? Let´s have a look and maybe you´ll find your reason to game as well!
I think most of us play games for fun, you have fun when you play games and there is nothing quite like it. Some would say that you´re wasting time, but you´re just having a great time doing what you do. Of course this can be anything in a game, because eventhough you play games for fun we all have our own interest when it comes to games. Some enjoy games where you go on an adventure, while someone else enjoys the survival horror experience. It´s my main motivation to play games, sure I like to win but it´s not my main motivation to pick up a controller and play games. But some people just love achievements and/or trophies, they collect them and try to get as much of them as possible. I guess it´s not quite the same as collecting stamps but you do collect something. Unlike stamps, achievements and trophies aren´t worth anything to other collectors. Well maybe some people would pay you to help get them a certain achievement or trophy, maybe some would even go so far that they want to buy your profile, but I don´t think there is much profit in collecting achievements or trophies.
So playing games for money is stupid? I wouldn´t say that, some lucky people actually have a job that requires them to play games. Think of people that have a job as a tester, game journalist or even work at a company like Rooster Teeth. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this company just look them up on the internet. Isn´t there a saying that you shouldn´t turn your hobby into your work? Well to be honest I don´t think that there is such a saying but I think I guess I can see what people would mean with that. Somehow I don´t think it´s that bad if you turn your hobby into your work, as long as it´s fun to do then it doesn´t really matter. Of course sometimes that requires that you keep it interesting, because if you do the same things over and over again in the same way then even the most fun thing to do can become quite annoying! Another way to earn money is to participate in a competition, but to be succesful there will mean that you´re a very good gamer. In other words that means that you have a lot of skill in a game or multiple games, as much as we all would like to have that only a few of us actually have it. But if you play for fun then who really cares?
People who play for fame might care! Because when I look at the people who scream for attention on youtube with their game videos then it´s sometimes quite clear that they want to get as much viewers and subscribers as possible. This doesn´t always mean that what they post is crap, some people actually have some funny footage or other interesting things to show. Unfortunately you also have a lot of people who like to make a montage of their kills, which is ok I guess but if you see that a bit too much then you can get quite annoyed and tired of it. Besides seeing other people play games often makes me want to play games, especially when they play a game I also have! Still playing for fame doesn´t make you an asshole or a loser, if you´re begging for attention then I think you´re a bit of a loser but I guess we all have our own way to the top of the heap! Just remember that if you play for fame that you´ll face more disappointment than succes, only a few succeed with this.
Last but not least you can also play games because your friends play games, it might even be the main reason why you started playing games. I played my first game on the NES at with a friend in his house. The moment I started playing I knew I wanted to have this console and game as well. So it´s not that weird if you got into gaming because of your friends, even if that´s your main motivation right now to play games. But I would suggest to not always blindly follow your friends, if gaming isn´t really your thing then don´t pretend for your friends. If they´re really your friends then they´ll want to hang out with you wether you like gaming or not. But it wouldn´t hurt to play some games with your friends every now and then. I guess the best reasons to play games is to play with your friends and for fun, because that way not only you have fun but you have fun playing games with your friends. This is really how it should be and I hope that a lot of people play games for one or both of these reasons. Games are fun, it´s even more fun if you can share it with your friends!
