Skill
A lot of times when I play multiplayer games I notice how the veterans and the newbies are mixed in with eachother in lobbies, which usually means that some will suck greatly and others will get ridiculous how scores. It´s because a lot of games don´t keep these groups apart, everything is mixed into one big pile of multiplayer and that often leads to a lot of frustration for some people.
Especially in big multiplayer games like Battlefield, Call of Duty and Gears of War you see all types of gamers mixed in the same matches. Most times this leads to a predictable outcome, because new players or people who are just not that good at playing games will often lose to people who play a lot or are just better at playing games. This often leads to skill and experience difference, something that should keep these two groups away from eachother. At least that´s the way I´d like to see it. As much as I like to get killstreaks and/or a high score in multiplayer, I prefer to earn it by matching my skills with those equal to mine. It´s kind of cheap to get that on people who don´t know what they´re doing or just can´t match your skill level. This isn´t arrogance, this is just how it is sometimes. I´ve been in matches in CoD Ghosts where I would crush the other team, scores above the 40 kills and hardly any deaths are not unusual in those matches. But then at other times I´d be in a match where I die 16 times and only have 4 kills to add to my name. It´s just ridiculous that you have situations like this!
So what should the developers do? I think it would be nice if you have skill based matches, that people that perform well in matches go to a higher level and people who perform less good will go down a level. This way you keep the winners together and the losers together, I say losers but I don´t mean that you suck. When you play a game then you always have winners and losers, that´s just the way it is. This way winners have some more competition and the losers have a better chance of winning against people of their own skill level. I saw something like that in CoD Black Ops 2 with the league system. The more matches you win the higher you get, but the more matches you lose the lower you get. Unfortunately this was still based on a team performance, so if you´re in a bad team then that can cost you the match and eventually make you drop in rank. I´d like to see something that just for your skills, you´re judged on your performance in a match. This means that the game looks how well you performed and what you exactly did, so if all you did was camp then that says nothing about your skill. But if you won a lot of one on one battles then that should advance you to a higher skill level.
Of course you have playlists where you get a veteran mode, hardcore mode or whatever name you give it. But a lot of players with skill still play on normal playlists, just to play against people that aren´t as good as they are in the game and which will often secure the victory to him or her. Personally I´m disgusted by people like that, because it´s a cheap way to earn experience and to look good. A lot of these people are good enough to play against veteran players, but they prefer to stick among the newer players. It´s a shame really, because people like that can ruin the game for new players. Because nobody enjoys a game where you constantly get killed by a veteran, especially when that veteran could easily play on a different playlist against people like him. That´s why I also think games should include something like a new playlist, where people who haven´t won a lot and haven´t been playing that game for many hours only have acces to it. This should keep the cowards out and the fun in a match!
