Assassin´s Creed IV Black Flag
After some thinking I decided to buy this game anyway, because I´ve played all the other Assassin´s Creed games on consoles and I did enjoy most of those. I usually try to soak up as much information before I buy a guy, this way I try to prevent myself from buying a game I don´t like, because it sucks if you waste your money on something you don´t really like. At the same time I try not to learn too much of the story because I don´t want to ruin the experience for myself, I mean if I know some major spoilers then I don´t feel much like playing the game anymore. I haven´t played the multiplayer yet, because I Always first want to play the singleplayer. But the moment I´ve played it and got some experience in it, I´ll talk about it more. I must admit that I really wanted to buy this game but something inside me kept me from buying it on the day it was released. But now a couple of days later I bought it anyway, mostly because of my love for the previous games. But was it a smart decision?
I´m on a ship? It probably won´t suprise you but as a pirate you spend a lot of time on your ship, so don´t expect to run through cities that much, no now you spend a lot of time on your boat and you are strongly encouraged to attack other vessels. You do this for resources and goods you can sell, the resources you need to improve your own ship so you can survive attacks from bigger and stronger ships. That´s really something I don´t like about this game, almost right from the moment you can go your own way on your ship you can encounter these huge bastards in the water, these ships will destroy you in seconds and yet they´re there from the beginning. Sure this puts some tension on you and you have to make good decisions, but it really sucks if they attack you because you get too close or if you go through hostile water (which is red on the map). Sometimes it´s a huge blanket of red with yellow (search areas where enemy ships see you and will start to attack you), this really takes away the feeling of freedom on your ship because you can´t just freely go wherever you want to go. Especially at first that sucks when you´re weak, so you can´t really pick any fights and you´ll just have to be patient and careful. Later when you improve your ship and especially when you can finally fast travel you have a better chance of surviving!
So what´s new? Well the ship is quite new, but in Assassin´s Creed III you also had a ship and you also had missions with it. But this is really your base of operations, you also have your own fleet which means that you have other ships that you can send on missions. This will earn you money and goods, so I can really recommend doing that. You can also hunt for animals, this will allow you to make new items. So you don´t buy armor anymore in a shop, now you hunt for a specific animal and this will allow you to make new armor to improve your health. It´s a lot like Far Cry 3 really, so if you´ve played that game then you´re probably familiar with this. You can also get bigger bags to carry more ammunation or carry extra pistols with these upgrades you can make from the skin or bones. Hunting isn´t only something you do on land, you can also hunt on the water with a harpoon in a small boat. It´s risky though, if you´re hunting something big (like a whale or a white shark) then you´re in for a fight! You travel from place to place with your ship, this will take some time but once you have fast travel unlocked it doesn´t have to be annoying. You can recruit new crew in taverns or you can save them from imprisonment. You don´t have to break the mast on an enemy ship to board it, now you just shoot the living hell out of it and at the brink of destruction you can board it. Then it´s all about killing a certain number of enemies until the others surrender, of course you can also blow up the ship before you board it But this means you get less goods, so be smart and board! You can now use plants as cover and you get a blowpipe to put enemies to sleep or drive them crazy (both for a short period). The dual wielding of your pistols is also nice because it allows you to shoot more enemies in a row, the more guns you have equipped the more people you can shoot without reloading.
Is it worth buying this game? It really depends on how much you enjoyed previous Assassin´s Creed games, if you loved Assassin´s Creed III then you´re going to like this as well. Because you now have a lot of sea missions and battles, something I really like in Assassin´s Creed III, which means you spend a lot of time on the water. But you have enough missions that take place on land, so don´t worry about that! If you have difficulties with sneaking then you get some help in the form of checkpoints during missions, so don´t worry about making mistakes because in a lot of missions you get checkpoints so you don´t have to do everything from the start. It´s an interesting story so far and I´m enjoying it a lot, I don´t know if it´s the best Assassin´s Creed game (I haven´t played enough in this game to compare it with the others I´ve played) but it certainly sticks out so far! So if you like Assassin´s Creed, if you like pirates and if you like adventure then this game might be something you´d like to play!
