Cheaters, what to do with them?
I think a lot of popular online multiplayer games have cheaters in them, some of them can be subtle but others are right in your face cheating! Of course sometimes you can be mistaken, you see your perfect shot not killing your opponent and it´s not unusual to think that this person must be cheating. The best thing you can do then is track this person and shoot him or her at close range, so you know you hit them and that it should kill that character. If nothing happens then you know there is something wrong, so reporting someone like that seems only natural. But what happens then?
Have you ever reported someone? When you were so certain that the person you reported was cheating. It might not suprise you but this doesn´t guarantee that the culprit is going to be removed from Xboxlive or PSN any time soon, so don´t be shocked if you can see this person again. Also let´s not forget that most of these cheaters play on a secondary account, something you can often recognize because of the very low gamer score or amount of trophies combined with often a gamertag that makes no sense at all. Of course this doesn´t have to make someone guilty, but it does raise your eyebrows and makes you wonder. I certainly don´t want to accuse people who are completely innocent, but usually these type of gamertags only seem to pop up in games like Call of Duty and Battlefield. Is that a coincidence? No I don´t think so!
Even when a profile gets deleted because that person was cheating, it doesn´t stop them from making another one. So instead of just taking away one profile, how about keeping that person completely off Xboxlive or PSN? If that´s even possible, because we all have a right to go online and to take that away from someone seems a bit dodgy to me when it comes to rules of freedom. But I do think that when you mess with the rules, by cheating, then you forfeit your right to play online with others! So maybe there is something else that can be done? How about having the word cheater in giant letters on that profile? This way that person can´t hide what he or she really is, which also makes it easier for others to recognize a cheater and kick that person from a match.
Of course you always need proof, you can´t accuse someone on just a hunch. Frustration might be your biggest enemy when it comes to falsely accusing someone, it sucks when someone keeps beating you and it might not be weird to get ideas of him or her being a cheater. But that thought is often fueled by frustration. As much as you might hate to try it, you might want to confront the person and/or get your own proof. This sometimes means that you´ll have to record your gameplay, for everyone that can´t do that or won´t do that then it becomes difficult to prove it. Of course you can still report someone, but the question remains: will this really make the cheater go away?
