Respect

It seems simple when I think about it, to treat someone the way you would like to be treated. Unfortunately this isn´t as simple as you might think. Having a different opinion is often enough to be insulted or even attacked. This happens a lot online, sometimes even without a real reason for it. But I´m not that suprised really, just turn on your tv and watch the news or read a newspaper and you´ll see that it doesn´t take much for people to act like idiots. So why should it be different online?

Personally I think it´s worse online, because people that feel safe behind their screens are often more loud then they would ever be face to face. Some people are also more detached online, they don´t really think about what they say and what they do. It´s just some random name that pops up on your screen, so why should you feel bad about it? Because that random name is a person, someone with feelings and emotions that deserve some respect! Anyone can be an idiot online, it doesn´t take much to be that guy or girl. Sometimes you get into a heated discussion and words are being said you don´t always mean, we all make mistakes and I would never claim to be flawless. But to learn from these mistakes, to try and be respectful to others is how you actually make a difference.

We all have our own opinion and a different taste, for example just looking at games it´s not strange that some people like a game and others hate it. But just because you hate a game it doesn´t make people that like the game stupid. I guess some sad people enjoy stirring up the fire, to start a discussion and then sit back and enjoy the show. Unfortunately there are always people ready to wage war online, to defend their opinion with agression if they have to. But you don´t make a difference by fighting fire with fire, you don´t comment at all and let the fire extinguish.

A lot of people take sides in a discussion, when it´s about games (Battlefield vs Call of Duty) or consoles (Microsoft vs Sony). There are always people that think they need to insult or be agressive in these discussions, because that will prove them and others that they´re right. Wrong! When it´s about opinions, then nobody is right. So you like Battlefield? Good for you, but that doesn´t make people who play Call of Duty retarded. The same counts for Call of Duty players, just because you enjoy the game it doesn´t make people who play Battlefield losers. Often I hear arguments that point out one is superior to the other, for example one has prettier graphics than the other game. Is that really so important? Does that make the other game stupid? We all have our own taste in games, these are opinions and not facts. To respect someone elses opinion makes you more mature then any amount of screaming you can do in an online discussion which game or console is better. Even if you have proof that one is better, it doesn´t give you the right to bash on people that have a different opinion. Even enemies can have respect for eachother, it´s sad to see that gamers don´t show this often online. You don´t have to like everyone, but at least try to respect eachother!
