YouTube adventures -86- Your face on every thumbnail?
You've probably seen these videos, people that love to put their mug on every thumbnail of every video they make. It's their video so they have every right to do so, but do you as a viewer like that or is that a bit too much for you? It's difficult to escape these mugs on YouTube, they'll stare at you unless you click on another video. All the faces on YouTube raise a question:
Do you need to have your face on every thumbnail?
I only have two videos with my face on the thumbnail, the first one is an introduction video and the other was a video where I talk about greed and I had this idea about putting chocolate coins in my mouth. Maybe not the most interesting thing to look at but I thought it was funny. I guess the main reason why I don't put my face on every thumbnail is because I don't think I have a face that everyone wants to look at nor do I want to look at it all the time. Oh sure I'm not ugly but does that mean I want to shove my mug into someone elses point of view? No, not really.
So why are there so many people who do have this urge to put their mug on every thumbnail of their videos? In a way it's a bit of recognition, that way you know it's from this YouTuber and not to be mistaken by another YouTuber who might have a similar name or style of video. I think we all want to do our own thing and be a bit unique with our videos and putting your own face on the thumbnail makes it definitely unique, unless you have a twin that looks just like you and does the same thing as you. But what are the chances on that? Wait, don't answer that! I really don't want to know.
Putting your face in the thumbnail of the video is often seen as being an attention whore, which might be true for some people but I don't think this applies to everyone. But it's easy to make a video more recognizable as yours without putting your face in the thumbnail, you could make a logo or maybe a cartoon version of yourself as your symbol. This works very well for some popular YouTubers, even some who have never even shown their face to any of their viewers. So honestly you don't have to put your face on every thumbnail to get viewers.
I guess the face in the thumbnail thing works well for attractive people, but I do wonder if people really want to watch the entire video just because they like the face in the thumbnail. But if the video is terrible and really is just a waste of time then I wonder how long that trick will work. So looks alone won't be enough, you do have to make something of your video or you will get lost in the ocean of videos on YouTube. I think most people that do have a lot of subscribers and put their face in every thumbnail of their videos has earned those subscribers, not because they like the face but because they like the videos.
